So my dentist yesterday told me that I need to have my wisdom teeth removed and also have a root canal done. Should I completely trust him since this is the first time I've been to his office and my old dentist never mentioned anything of the sort. what I'm saying is, do some dentists just like telling you that you need stuff done on your teeth? no offense to dentists in general.

A lot of dentists are really gun-ho on pulling out wisdom teeth. I think they actually enjoy it. Avoid it if at all possible, it sucks.

Um... the root canal thing sounds a bit odd. I've never heard of a teenager needing to get one of those before. Getting your wisdom teeth out is pretty normal in high school/early college, however. It hurts but, as long as you don't get an infection (I did! It sucked.), it's a pretty routine procedure.

You could try going to a different dentist and getting a second opinion. I'd HIGHLY recommend doing that if you don't feel comfortable with his decision (I did that myself before I got my wisdom teeth out because I was afraid my orthodonist was pulling teeth happy).

if your wisdom teeth are coming in crooked, you need to get them removed, but it will hurt like h*ll.

i got mine removed last year even though they were growing in straight and i bled for 3 days :(

but the drugs they give you were worth it...i loved that codeine.

no seriously, my mom had to take it away from me after the third day because she walked in the house and i couldn't recognize her because of all the codeine :) it was fun...

oxycodone sucks almost as much as the pain without it

Hm...my dentist just told me today I might need to get mine removed. While my dad says it's a scam to get money...Oddly there's no scientific proof that extraction of wisdom teeth is a good preventative measures to the stuff they tell you...Oh well I'll go look for a second opinion.

Ok.. Your old dentist never mentioned anything about root canal? If your dentist is telling you have a root canal, it means lets perform the action of removing all the bacteria before your dentist is forced to remove it permanetly.

Getting your wisdom teeth pulled out doesn't hurt like hell. I think it's different for everyone. A friend of mine had his teeth pulled out and went to school the next day. I probably wouldn't have in his case because his cheeks were all red and puffy. It was crazy looking.

I remember having my teeth pulled out 3 years ago and it didn't hurt at all.

if it's your first time with that dentist and your old dentist never mentioned it, I'd get another opinion before doing anything.
just wondering though... what made you switch dentists?

We moved to another town.

And how should I get a second opinion unless i go to another dentist?

i just got my wisdom teeth out tdaoy... Except the fact that it hurts to open my mouth wide its not bad at all

Did your dentist say they were impacted?

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

To get a second opinion you'll have to go to another dentist. It's no big deal, though... getting one is a normal thing that many do before agreeing to surgery.

get a second opinion!............

Errm, if you your dentist says to get a root canal, then get a root canal. It can get a lot worse... I don't see what you're trying to get around here...

i hear that dentist try to scam people a lot..for example, we all know people who have or had braces and didn't need them, but their dentisit told them they should get them.

First my orthodontist said, "Ya, they're coming out," like 6 months ago when I only had the bottom right one in fully, and none of the others up at all, but now another's coming in and he says the other day, "Maybe we can leave 'em in." Progress, in't it?

My first dentist would say I had a cavity almost every time I went there and he would show me the xray and be like "See it's right there," but there was nothing there. My new dentist doesn't do that plus he is HOT (he's only 30).
