The streetcar incident happened to me and DS, except we were on a city bus and left alone in a very rough area of NOLA. Assuming my son does ultimately end up at Tulane, he will be given a car at the earliest convenience.

I don’t think you’re crazy at all. I hold the same philosophy although H disagrees. A big part of responsible drinking is knowing what it feel like when you’ve ‘had enough’. If you never go into the sun without sunscreen you have no idea if you will burn in 5 minutes or 50 minutes, you won’t know what your skin feels like when it is on the verge of burning…you won’t know when to get back under the umbrella.

Regarding the streetcar. My kid told me that a student this year received some minor injuries from hanging out of a streetcar window during an inebriated ride home late one Saturday night. Got smacked by a tree branch, although at low speed. Keep your head and hands inside the vehicle!!

Since Nola is a convention city, it has a good supply of cabs even at late hours. A big percentage of the Nola cabs are minivans or big SUVs. So it is pretty cheap and easy for 5-6 kids to pile into a cab for the late night ride home. So while there’s definitely drinking, there’s not so much drinking and driving.

Thanks to everyone for your input, particularly the Tulane student. :)

And don’t worry about veering off topic here…the streetcar story is pretty funny!
