I'm getting my first C ever

...I just found out today, and I've been bawling my eyes out. It's in AP English. How it came down to this, I have no idea. I know I wasn't doing too well, I had done pretty poorly on a couple of quizzes. But I had no idea that a couple quizzes would bring me down this much. I did well on all other tests and papers, but apparently quizzes were worth the same amount of points so it didn't even matter.

God, I am so angry right now. I talked to the teacher too, and she said she won't do anything about it. Will this hurt me a lot in terms of college admissions? I'm a senior, and my semester grade in this class will be a 78. I'm doing alright in other classes (a B in AP Calculus, but As in others) and my GPA up till now had been around a 3.8 unweighted. I have no idea what it will be now, I'm just hoping that this blemish won't look too bad on my midyear report.

For the record, I have applied to BU, Tufts, JHU, Northeastern, and some safeties. Am I doomed?

With the 78, your GPA will drop and I think it will hurt you most with Tufts or JHU.

I know how it feels. A 78 hurts even more than a 70. Only really pesky teachers would not give you the extra 2 points.

i dont think it really matters.

What is the grade distribution for the class? That seems really important - because if the teacher is not giving As, then you can perhaps think of explaining the grade via your guidance department. It is what it is though - and I sympathize, as I am watching the situation develop much the same for my very hard working hs senior too. Chin up ! I think many of the AP teachers are tough graders in an extreme. I read some of my high school student's papers - some are well done - yet rarely are they graded above a B level.

sometimes the little glitches are what force us to find the correct direction to face in order to make our way. Have you really looked to see which colleges are the perfect fit for you? One college admissions dean was quoted in Forbes as saying that choosing a college is as important as choosing a spouse. Make sure you have found your perfect fit. Grades force us to see on paper what the reality is whether we like it or not - my son for example, whose account I am writing on, is such an amazing person, but on paper wouldn't get in to any LAC. However, as soon as the admissions interviewers meet him, everything changes. Admissions staff know what they are looking for. If you interact with them and they see you on their campus and you really want to be on that campus because of their programs and similarity with the student body, your grades and scores be adjusted accordingly. Colleges are finding it harder and harder to keep their students. They want you to fit. Keep looking and opening doors... best of luck, cb's mom

how could you get a C in your own language? that is my real question

^ Don't listen to this guy, he's ignorant

Getting a C for a quarter isn't going to make or break you. I've gotten multiple C's in my day and I still got into my top choice school which is really competitive and weighs a lot on GPA.

Try harder next quarter.

I feel for you. Please just hope for the best and try harder next time. Some teachers are just like that and you can't do much about it unfortunately :(

hahahaahahahahahahaahahahahah QQ

^What's so funny?

And thanks everyone. I will definitely bring my grade up next term, although colleges probably won't even see it at that point, so it won't even matter will it?

Makes me wanna slit my wrists

sak09, I'm in the same boat (with a different subject). After moping about my own midyear report I realized that though there's not much you can do now about the C, there is one more semester left. Therefore, we have a chance to redeem ourselves.

You're not screwed. If it's only one, and the rest of your grades have been strong, you shouldn't have much trouble. Any college that will turn you down would have probably turned you down anyways. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, just get your grade up this go 'round.

For your information "Secret Asian Man", I'm a woman.

Don't worry about it. One C in a quarter, especially in an ap class, won't make or break you.

I know what you're feeling...but much much worse. Freshman year 1st semester (block schedule) I got a 78 in alg.2 , 78 in world hist., 77 in writing, and a 77 in physcial sci. Since then I've done great, and I'm hoping the extreme upwards progress will help me. I'm just sayin, don't worry about it.

tashersXD: Then you are one incredibly rude and ignorant woman.
