...because I just received my first B+ in my high school career (i go to a prep school in Manhattan). This B+ was in physics honors and the teacher this year is brutally hard. I don't need to explain too thoroughly how hard he is because I am sure many CC'ers have teachers like that ... But listening to my parents, it seems like I can't even think of going to Harvard or an Ivy now! Is this true? Also, how can you convey to either an admissions officer or your guidance counselor the difficult of this teacher??

Again, please don't flame me or say "loser, you'll go to a community college now" I need some helpful advice. This + my mother going to the hospital is really not helping my day.

Don't worry about one B+. This just demonstrates that you are an imperfect human being as opposed to a robot. You have got nothing to worry about except if it will make your class rank drop significantly (let's say, from #2 to barely within the top 10%), but I cannot imagine that any schools would be that grade-inflated. Don't worry, you'll be fine :)

Wow. Not a year went by in my high school career when I didn't have at least one B. I only got straight As two quarters out of the 16 I was in school. I'm going to Barnard next year. I got a likely letter from UVA. I got into W&M and Smith.

I used to worry a lot about low 90's, like a 92 or something. It kind of makes a difference in your ranking. It really depends on how much your ranking will drop. You should be okay though.

Don't worry. The Ivies -- and indeed all colleges -- want real people, not robots. One single B+ shows that you're human. =p Plus, since your school doesn't rank, it can't hurt you there, either.

It won't have an effect, I promise. =)

(Btw, if you go on the 'actual results' thread in the 'chances' forum, you'll see that many people who got Bs in highschool got into Ivies and other selective colleges.)

It's fine! As far as I have seen, people with 3.9+ have been at least as successful in admissions as those with a 4.0. One B+ is NOT a big deal. I know it feels yucky, when you haven't gotten one before...but it won't hurt you.

my friend who got into harvard even took some regular classes. she's not a minority. her ec's were average. our school is ranked among the top in the state. don't worry. convey yourself well through your essays and your interview and you'll be fine. just don't dwell on your b+ - colleges hate when you do that (not to mention nearly everyone else). it just makes it see like grades and not what you learned are the most important.

The most important thing to remember is that you have the B+, it makes no sense to worry about what HAS happened, you can only control what you will do from this point on, you cannot change the past. Relax, as others have said, it really won't impact your chances, and even if it did, there is nothing you can do about it at this point.... take a deep breath, and do as well as you can in the classes you are currently in. Good luck!!

There is really no need to visit the college counselor. She will simply echo everyone else's comments that one B+ will really not hurt you whatsoever in the long run. It is MUCH better to concentrate on other aspects of admissions (essays, ECs) than to worry about one grade that is still very good.

I realize that it's tough to have something happen that has never happened before but really, it's not a big deal. You'll do fine.
