im graduating soon, looking for jobs, and my old internship boss emailed me. respons?

hey guys,

so i interned at some company in the fall of last year and i left on good terms. i worked really hard in that internship.

anyway im graduating soon and ive been interviewing for jobs. on friday, my boss from the internship emailed me and asked me how im doing.

im not sure how to respond? by that i mean, could it be an opportunity? how should i respond?

my finals start in 2 weeks and i was advised to ask my boss to lunch or coffee.

so how should i say it? something along the lines of:

"hey its nice to hear from you. school hasnt ended yet im studying for finals. ive been interviewing for jobs recently.

do you want to grab lunch some time?"

will that be appropriate? i mean im randomly asking my boss to lunch and im afraid he might think im desperate for a job (well im looking haha).

also who pays for the lunch?? i do or split? this is embarassing..

Say something like “It’s good to hear from you. I’m graduating soon–I’d like to catch up and get advice about the upcoming transition. Do you have time to meet for coffee or lunch in the next week or so?”

When you meet, tell him or her that you’re interviewing for jobs and looking to transition to the working world. Ask him or her if they have any tips about where to apply or anything else related to this life transition–if he or she wants to hire you, he or she will probably bring it up. Oh, and you each pay for your own purchases.

Ah ok, so I shouldn’t mention that I’m interviewing for jobs in the email and mention that when we both meet?
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it :)

I don’t know that I would mention that you’re interviewing for jobs in the e-mail, but I would definitely mention it in person.

I would write something like…

Hello,

It’s good to hear from you! My schedule is a little hectic right now as it is the end of the semester so I am studying for exams and looking for full-time employment, doing interviews, etc. Would you be able to meet for lunch or coffee sometime? I really enjoyed working at internship goes here last fall and would love to catch up!

Respectfully,
giantqtipz

I assume your boss new you were a senior last fall. There is no reason to hide the fact that you are looking for a job. That is what all college seniors are doing. That said, obviously don’t respond “I’m doing ok. Can you hire me?”

haha thanks so much for the advice guys! I received a response today and he said hes more than happy to meet :D

one last question (i guess). if im offered a job when we meet, like “we’re thinking of hiring you”— something like that.

how should i respond. i mean im interviewing with other companies too. so is it appropriate to say “thank you so much for the offer. im interviewing with others right now, and will definitely consider this opportunity”?

also if i accept straight away on the spot, is that bad?

I would say something like: “I really enjoyed my time at the internship and the people were great. Right now I am interviewing with lots of places, but I would be very interested in working at X full time if there is an appropriate entry-level position.”

I think something like this shows you are very interested, but you cannot accept until the offer is in writing. I wouldn’t say that you will 100% accept until you get a look at the compensation/benefits package, but you can show that you are 99% in the “yes” column. I’m sure he will understand that you will keep interviewing until you have a firm offer in your hand. To expect someone to do anything else is unrealistic.
