I get straight A's, but somehow my rank is 27...my classes are challenging. I don't understand how this could happen. My friend has the exact same schedule as me but is ranked 21. I used to be rank 3 or 4. I don't understand. I haven't even met anyone ranked higher than me, I don't know who these people are that are beating me. Are they tanking extra classes? I don't know.

My chances of going to Stanford are gone now...my rank was the only thing I had going for me.

it’s not only about rank. Are these people above you also applying to Stanford? Also how big is your school? Still, if you are taking a rigorous course load and getting good grades I don’t think this rank will hurt you too much. Don’t lose hope! We’ve only got a month left and just stay optimistic! We are all starting to doubt ourselves and our abilities. Since there is nothing we can do about it anymore, there’s no point going around feeling depressed. Try to not think about it and enjoy your senior year! That’s what I’m doing!

I forgot to mention, I am a junior right now. It’s too late to repair a bad rank. I can’t go back in time. If I push really hard, I’d only be in the teens. I go to a large public. My classes are indeed rigorous, but not significantly more than anyone else. “Very demanding”, not “Most demanding”. Well, I do believe I can write a good essay. Is it true that a 2100 SAT and some good essays can get you in? How much does Stanford weight your rigor?

Rigor is important. Don’t slack off next year in your schedule or in your first semester grades. Just because you don’t have the ‘most rigorous’ schedule doesn’t mean you won’t get in.
Great essays can have a big impact on admission especially at Stanford. Now I don’t know all of your stats or anything so idk your chances, but I recommend starting essays early (this summer) they could be the deciding factor between acceptance and rejection!

rank to a certain degree means nothing… focus on your EC’s. I wish I believed this advice earlier… but I was too focused on getting the highest gpa and 100%'s (even when a 90 is the same as 100 on our grading scale)

The supplements are part of it though, right? I’ll start those I guess.

I know EC’s are more important. I’m afraid that I’m not even to the threshold. I will have a total of 5 AP’s (1 this year). 4.0 unweighted. My rank needs to be within the top 5%.

On my schedule, some of my classes are random electives…not very good choices.

Going to a large public, I feel that I am on the borderline admission threshold. If I can get a 2100 SAT, I think I am set. If I only get a 2000, well, I hope my essays are good.

yeah honestly i would seriously chill if i were you. rank is meaningless, gpa is meaningless. they can see your grades and the classes you do, all that crap is artificially produced by your school. so long as you work to enrich yourself and not to make urself look awesome, and like actually are genuinely passionate in what you do [within reason] while being pretty successful in whatever that is [engineering i take it], you should be pretty ok IMO

Don’t stress. Rankings, grades and SATs aren’t that important as long as you meet the bar. It’s passion that they look at the most important - something unique and different that sets you apart from everybody else

I got in with a 2010 SAT and ranked 25/180 (around top 14%).

Nice, colingray. I’m not going to ask about hooks or anything…that’s truly awesome. I guess essays play a big role. I think essays are the only way to show the unique-ness. Hooks still help, I suppose.

Yeah think about it this way: just because you’re better than a lot of people in your school, doesn’t mean you’re better than all the people applying! haha I’m not trying to be mean I’m just saying don’t stress about rank too much it’s not really that important.

You need to chill out man. Seriously. When I read this, I felt like you were sobbing in the background. Take a deep breath. Rank isnt everything though i would suggest you try to score above a 2100 on your SATs. Dropping from 3 to 23 is also a huge jump in a year. There are three explanations for this.

You got some Bs.

They ****** up your transcript.

You were actually rank 30 and instead moved up to rank 23.

If it’s the latter you should be happy. With 5 APs though, you should drop that much. That would’ve had to have meant that 27 other people took more than 5 APs or transferred some JC credit to your school to pass you up. I doubt that happened.

In my DS school, there are 30 kids with perfect GPA’s, most will graduate with 10 or so AP classes. This is a public school in a great school district. So, what makes a difference in rank is if someone took some of the “unweighted” classes, like Band, or Art or other things. The one student that didn’t take PE is ranked number one (no unweighted courses!) If you love band or art- take them! The student with band and art and PE is ranked 30- but probably enjoyed high school more. They are all terrific students with a lot to offer. It is not all about GPA, and rank. These great kids (and you) will get into schools that are good fits for them. Most Adcoms know about the rigor of the school and take that into account when looking at rankings. Numbers are only part of the picture.
