My GPA is making me really depressed...

I am a junior right now, and when I reflect over the past two years of high school and this year we so far, I feel horrible. Of course I have had a lot of good times with friends and amazing ECs but most of my time was spent studying; working through nights, staying home some weekends to study, I don't even watch any TV bc I'm always studying and always stressed out. Many of my teachers in fact say that I am the hardest working student they've ever seen. I take all the honors and APs available to me as well. BUT believe it or not, I only have a 93 UW gpa and I want to apply to Columbia, Penn, and schools like that. Clearly my GPA is low for those schools. And this I am upset because not only do I have less of a shot, but I feel like all my work is to waste. I am so angry and just don't understand why I study so much but my GPA still sucks. :(

There is no reason to just give up. Just think, there is nothing that you can do about what happened in the past. Keep working hard and you might still have a change. Good luck!

well weighted wouldn.t that 93 be far higher. I mean a 1.1 curve for aps can raise a 90 to 99. Perhaps more APs will help you.

^Agreed. Also, colleges like course rigor! They take that into account when looking at GPA. Believe me, being valedictorian doesn’t make much of a difference anymore. The val last year at my school got in Berkeley, the guy ranked like 5-7th got into Stanford. Noticeable difference in admissions selectivity.
Going on with the course rigor part, colleges will look at your 93 much more favorably than a kid who takes as many electives and non-honors/AP classes as possible with a 99. You are a very dedicated kid too, judging by your post, and when college apps come around your teachers will give you glowing recs that will further set you apart from the crowd!
You are doing great. Keep it up and bonne chance! :)

My school doesn’t do weighted…and also I go to a religious school that writes both GPA from religious classes and from secular classes separately, which makes it worse because my religious classes GPA is like a 92.

By the way (on my phone so I can’t edit) what exactly are you having trouble with? Is it retaining information or something else?

I have absolutely no idea. I considered maybe that I have ADD or something, but I highly doubt that. Also freshman year and sophomore year (before I started using CC) I thought an A minus was considered good. This is partially because I go to a tiny school where many ppl aren’t really so studious so I had no idea what the “norms” are for ivy-top school hopefuls.

Hmm…is your gpa being dragged down by your homework or your quizzes/tests?
Lol what CC does to us…

Depends on the class…some teachers are just very arbitrary and don’t give A’s easily.

Maybe try doing a spring sport or some other EC to de-stress a little. It also helps time management in my opinion more than not getting out and doing social things. Plus you’ll have fun! :)

I do have a number of ECs and an ok social life. What’s bothering me is that I have a GPA, which is the most important part of a transcript, that is too weak for top colleges, and in addition it is psychologically disheartening to know that I’ve worked so much for nothing.

The title of this thread is an insult to people who are actually suffering with depression.

well consider it this way. Each college weighs GPA’s differentl.y Princeton for one puts a larger emphasis on GPA. Cornell however not so much. Extra curriculurs can definately boost you. Maybe some extra aps over summer can help. And of course if you have the horrible teacher yet you still got a 5 on your A.P., mention it on your essay. A4.0 gpa does not guarantee you a spot. its quite the contrary, colleges look to see if you’re a book worm, or a polymath.

Who ever said it was too weak for top colleges?
Dude, do you know how many people with at least one B end up being accepted to top colleges? You’re doing fine. And also, colleges like seeing upward trends. You can’t change the past, so work harder toward your future. Sounds like it’s working to me-I’m assuming you got at least a couple B’s in 9th and 10th grades but now you’re not. Or at the very least you’re getting less B’s than before. Am I right? If so, that’s great for colleges. If not, try getting tutoring for help with all the AP/honors classes.

Oh, stahp it.
I was expecting someone with a 1.0 or something.

As long as you are in the top 15% of your class (or thereabouts) I doubt it will be the deciding factor. Enjoy life, write good essays, and enjoy life.

My school doesn’t rank and is not well-known at all. That’s the problem

lol my gpa went from a 4.0 to a 3.85 this semester. AP Chem + AP Phys C = death of me.

Also lol that I ever thought I could be an engineer
or that I could get into harvey mudd

Seriously

I did not evaluate my life very well

OP, I don’t think you need to sweat your GPA. It’s kind of all relative.
I’d say you go find some interests! (:
