what are the chances of me convincing my counselor that i can double up math classes next year by taking geometry and algebra 2 so i can take calculus senior year in 7th grade we had the option whether we wanted to take an advanced math class for 8th grade or be in regular i met all the requirements that it said but my teacher didn’t recommend me because my teacher didn’t recommend me i ended up being stuck in the normal math class which sucked last year if i double up i will be able to take calculus if don’t i will be taking precalculus i want to go to an elite college though and it will look better if i took calculus than pre calculus my overall grade in math right now is an 88 but it could be much higher if i studied more what should i do
Talk to your counselor, every school might have different rules about doubling up on math. Be sure your current teacher will give you a good recommendation. Have you considered taking the credit by exam to skip a grade level over the summer?
I took both algebra 2 and geometry at the same time during my freshman year, even though my school usually doesn’t allow it. Talk to your counselor, as long as you have good grades in math, they’ll probably support you.
I would definitely try to convince your guidance counselor to let you double up if you want to go to an elite college. The guidance counselor might try to convince you out of it, but ultimately it’s your decision. Studying more now to raise your grade might help convince your guidance counselor, and it will help prepare you better for next year. Good luck!
I took Algebra 1 in 9th grade and doubled up on Geometry and Algebra 2 Honors sophomore year. I got an A in Geometry, but struggled in Algebra 2 Honors: B-. But, now I’m in AP Calculus AB my senior year and I have an A.
I’m sure you could do it!
Ask your GC about summer classes or online courses.
Dude I went through the same exact thing. I wanted to take A.P. Calc. so bad. So after taking Geometry, I told my counselor that I wanted to take Algebra 2 over the summer online. I took it online and finished it in the summer. Now I am a senior and I am in A.P. Calculus! Good luck.
Nice. I will try and see.
Taking the credit by exam? What do you mean?
@mylesrocks1 As in, taking a test (e.g. an exam similar to an Algebra II final) in order to not have to take the corresponding class.
As others have said, talk to your school’s GC about it. Schools and districts usually have different rules about doubling up in math classes, or skipping math classes.
Right now you have an 88. That’s a B.
You’re not going to convince anyone of anything with that.
Pull your grade up to a solid 100. Then talk to your guidance counselor.
agree with bjkmom…unfortunately you are in no position to speak to the GC until you have a very solid A
I think she means “solid A,” since getting to a 100 avg would be a mathematical impossibility. But the point is definitely valid.
Taking a summer class does not need to be A in previous level Math.
Good point skieurope.
I meant an A from this point onward.
If you aren’t even motivated enough to study hard enough to get an A in algebra1, why is taking calculus while still in high school so important to you? As people have stated above, there are ways to get to calculus (doubling up on math courses, summer school, taking online an online class). But if you can’t even get an A in algebra1, I question whether it’s a good idea for you to push ahead faster. Those algebra 1 skills are essential for later success.
This site isn’t an English term paper, but you will be taken more seriously by the adult world if you learn to write complete sentences and use punctuation.
Story Time: I was in the same boat as you in middle school, except my math grades were solid C’s. I even got a C my first quarter of Algebra 1, but about mid-way through the year I put my mind to studying and I ended up with a 95 for the year. I doubled up on alg 2 and gemoetry sophomore year. Another option is to take classes online over the summer. I actually tried to do this, but my strict private school wouldn’t let me. I’ve also heard of kids doubling up on geometry and pre-cal junior year; however, I wouldn’t suggest that since junior year is a lot already. If I were you, I’d double up sophomore year, take pre-cal online the summer before junior year, and then you would be able to take two years of calculus.
In all honesty, a ‘B’ isn’t as bad as people on this site make it out to be. Obviously, top colleges want A’s, but having a B in algebra I right now is more of a measurement of your work ethic rather than mathematical ability. Taking two maths sophomore year is just a bit more homework, the classes themselves aren’t that hard. Definitively strive to pull your grades as high as you can though since your school seems pretty strict about creating off-track schedules. I think you can do it, and considering you’re even thinking about this shows you have some ambition.
As for the GC, figure out EXACTLY what your school’s policy is on this. I know at my school, a parent can override pretty much anything, but especially since taking two maths isn’t like skipping an entire class altogether, I don’t see why they should stop you.
Please capitalize, use punctuation, and break your text into paragraphs (for future posts )
Are you in Algebra1 regular or not?
You do NOT need to take calculus to attend a top college, but you do need A’s (A or A-) in honors classes, including Algebra1H, GeometryH, Algebra2H, and PrecalculusH.
Before you can ask to double up, you need to bring your math grade to a solid A, as many other posters said, and show better work ethics, requesting extra hw in addition to completing all the hw assigned.
yeah I’m taking algebra 1 honors but i will still end up only taking precaluclus if i don’t double up and i don’t feel like using grammar and punctuation cause I’m too lazy to even though i know how to use correct grammar and punctuation i don’t feel like it cause it’s the internet lol
Yeah thanks for the story lol the only thing I’m worried about is i think my algebra 1 teacher has to decide whether she thinks i should or not but i guess it wouldn’t matter cause my parents can sign override forms
