Starting this year I will be in 9th grade but I am in algebra 1. I had an option to take a placement test to skip algebra 1. I decided not to do that because I wanted a stronger foundation in algebra. So for 10th grade I was thinking about taking geometry and algebra 2. I was wondering how difficult it would be to take both. Since I am also going to try to do some honor classes and maybe 1 AP class. By the way at my school I’m pretty sure you cannot do summer class for geometry. I am not the best at math but I’m not the worst.
I have never heard of anyone doing 2 math classes. would your school really allow that? I understand your frustration- if you aren’t ahead of the curve in middle school math you will basically always be behind and will never feel competitive for top colleges. it’s getting worse and worse as kids are now taking geometry in 8th grade and starting high school with algebra 2 in 9th. crazy and ridiculous, IMO.
I really think getting permission to take Geometry as a summer class is the better way to go.
You should talk to your guidance counselor and math teacher (or head of the math department) to see what your HS allows/recommends.
If you feel you must double up, taking Geometry and Algebra 2 together is probably the best time to do it. A lot of high schools are okay with it. The only reason to do that would be if you are a STEM hopeful (and you think it would help your application to reach some level of calculus by senior year) OR you are planning to apply to one of the few colleges or programs that require or strongly recommend calculus.
I don’t suggest doubling up if you’re doing it at the expense of another core class.
I am not really a fan of cramming a year of math into a summer, but it works okay for some students. Our school only permits it to retake the class for a better grade.
This is sometimes done at our high school among strong math students who weren’t fast tracked in seventh grade. Since there aren’t that many kids fast tracked early, there are always some who get to high school and realize their current track will not get them to calculus senior year. I would guess that a handful of kids do it every year, though I have no idea how difficult it is.
My school allows doubling up Geometry and Algebra 2 without department approval. Some of my friends took Geometry + Algebra 2 in Freshmen year and said Geometry was very manageable, while Algebra 2 was not too difficult.
Also: It depends a lot on your teachers! Geometry was a breeze for me because my learning style matched with the teacher’s teaching style. I’d say you should give it a try! It’s a good opportunity to double-up.
This was allowed in my D’s HS too. I’d see if you could talk to others who have done it at your HS to get a sense of work load.
My daughter wasn’t selected for Algebra 1 in 8th grade. We petitioned and were told she was one point away from being admitted. Asked again to get her in and it was still no. During the first Teacher conference we were told that they made a mistake and she should have been in Algebra, but it was too late to move her up. She took Honors Geometry and Honors Algebra 2 Sophomore year and did well in both and is currently doing well in Calculus. It can be done.
