I'm in a predicament.

So I have applied early decision, and Im trying to decide whether or not to send my first quarter grades. My SAT score, 2030, is not very good and my grades, although poor at the beginning, are on an upward trend (3.3 fr., 3.9 so., 4.5 ju.). I was aiming for good grades to start the year to show the continuation of that upward trend, but after getting my quarter grades I realized that my math grade stuck out like a sore thumb. What should I do?

First Quarter:
Independent Study AP Computer Science: A
AP Economics: A
AP Statistics: A-
Honors English: A
Honors Physics: A
AP Calculus BC: C+

One of these things is not like the other...

Let me know what I should do.

Is it possible to get a quick note from your teacher to accompany the grade report? Do you think that your grade will improve?

The grade could possibly improve, but its hard to tell at this point. I initially wanted to drop down into AP Calc AB but my BC teacher told me that I was understanding everything and that I was a slacker. So I could improve it I guess.

Hmmm. Are you a slacker? It doesn’t sound like your teacher would explain the grade in a positive way, so I would send the report (because you pretty much have to) with a note saying that you are challenging yourself with the BC, and continuing it even though an easier option is available because that is the kind of person you are. Then, I would find a tutor, and impress your teacher so that they can send a late recommendation attesting to your improvement and solid attitude. CMC says they will look at additional recs, and you need the quarter of As. You might want to delay sending the grades until you can demonstrate improvement.

Do you think your teacher our GC will work with you? It never hurts to ask. It also doesn’t hurt to call CMC and put yourself out there. They are one of the few schools that really seemed to stress that interest and passion matter in the admissions process.

I am very much so a slacker. Thank you for the advice and I will probably discuss these options with my guidance counselor to see if he likes them. I don’t think I will need a tutor because I haven’t had any real trouble understanding the material; it’s more a matter of work ethic.

Thanks
