So I know that taking 18 is kind of the max in a way. You can technically register for 30 per quarter. I don't even want to imagine how difficult that would be, but that's a story for another time. Anyway, 18 credits in one quarter counts as a full-time student, and is the most you can go without paying extra tuition. So I'm on financial aid right now, and I'm wondering about what that extra tuition entails:

How much extra tuition would it be if I took 20 credits? Or does it kind of vary?

How would I pay for it? Could financial aid cover that in its entirety, or I'm guessing do I have to pay a few extra hundred dollars myself on top of that?

I know that you cannot register past 18 credits until Registration Period III (which is the first day of the quarter). I'm guessing they do this to give everyone a fair chance at registering before the start of the quarter, and from discouraging people from being too adventurous with their credits. But I remember attempting to register for 20 credits during Registration Period III once, and the system didn't let me anyway just because it was too many. What was the problem? I would attempt it again right now to see what I did wrong, but after the second week, late adds and drops are recorded on the transcript, so now's not a safe time to experiment.

This may make the difference of whether I get to graduate with an extra minor, so the help is greatly appreciated!

I’m wondering the same thing as well. Anyone?

Oh, and what does it mean “Period III?” How does one register at the start of the quarter?

It’s an extra $271/credit, plus any extra cost for the course (ie lab fees, art fees, etc)

That is true. Hmm, so you couldn’t register for 20? I would call the Registration office about that; technology is definitely not perfect, and perhaps there was a bug. I’m sure they’d be happy to help.

Also, I heard the 30 credits is usually for med/graduate students who also throw in research for some credits. For undergrads, I know around 4-5 first years who are taking 22+ credits. Crazy, right? Crazier - they’re all doing GREAT. And it’s not a light load… maths/sciencey type courses with some econ thrown in. Obviously, 18+ isn’t for everyone (I would probably never go over 18), but if you do plan on going over, choose your course combination carefully!

My freshman year i did 20 credits per quarter for all four quarters (including summer). I did fine… 4.0 in most of my classes, lowest grade was a few 3.7’s.

You just have to be ready to dedicate your life to your studies.

I stopped once i took care of the 100-200 level classes i needed. I personally couldn’t do that load w/ 300-400 level classes

How? How do you sign up for 20 credits when the limit for Period I & II is 19? How does the Period III registration process work?

she was a transfer, she didnt do it at uw

Oh, so I can’t take 20 credits for my first year, then? I was hoping on taking an additional language class

you have to get it ok’d by an advisor, me thinks
