I’m a junior at the University of Washington (UW) -Seattle, but a Senior by credit because I did running start in high school. I have 135 credits, and my current major is Earth and Space Sciences (ESS). I wanted to major in Human Centered Design & Engineering, but unfortunately, I did not get accepted due to my low GPA. I enjoy doing design, specifically graphic design but I also want to learn more about UX/UI design. However, I don’t have the time to learn about that when I’m too busy working on my ESS courses which I’m not enjoying.
I still have to complete 50 more credits within the major, but I don’t know how much longer I would be able to handle it. I’ve looked into the other majors that UW offers but the ones they had were either competitive or not of my interest. Due to my lack of interest, I feel unmotivated to continue with my studies and going to school in general. I feel like I’m stuck in a position I don’t want.
I was considering dropping out, but the issue with that is I don’t have a plan for what I’m going to do in the meantime. I’ve also thought about transferring to another school, but I don’t know if I would end up in the same spot and I don’t know how that would affect my financial aid. I wish I was more aware of my consequences of going to UW. So now I’m not sure what to do anymore. I feel like I screwed up big time. If anyone has any advice for me that would be helpful. Thanks.
Finish. You are so close. Just Do it! In five years you’ll have a degree and be working in another field but no one can take that U of W degree away from you
@Goosades - Try to imagine being your future self, maybe your future self five years from now. Do you think, looking back, you would have more regret staying and finishing college, or more regret not finishing college?
I had a friend was one course from finishing his CogSci degree but wanted to change majors to Applied Math. He found out that if he obtained his degree, he would no longer be eligible for undergraduate financial aid. He changed majors, took an extra year with financial aid, but never finished the first major.
You should figure out what you want to major in and why you want to major in it. You do want to finish out this quarter because you’re in the middle of it and it would be costly to withdraw. Maybe you can drop one course if it won’t drop you below full-time and cause you to lose your financial aid. Maybe use the time to really figure out some options.
Perhaps consider taking a leave of absence for Spring quarter (which retains your option to return) while you look at transfer possibilities.
