I am a Graphic Design major with 2.5 semesters left until graduation. I recently have come to find that I hate designing things. I don't care what font I should use, I don't care who made them, I don't want to design your logo. I feel so dumb for feeling like this with me being so close to finishing my BA degree but I cannot even think about forcing myself to complete another year of this. I want out but I don't want to let my family down or shoot myself in the foot career wise even though I feel I will be doing that anyway because this degree can only be used in the design area. I am thinking I should just get a business degree instead. Maybe even possibly completing it online from a well known university (Not one of the for profit schools on tv). I really need some advise as to what to do. Has anyone else felt this way?

just me…but I always think about the $$. can you afford to blow off what you have done and start over. If so, then change majors. If not, then maybe you should go talk to teachers or advisors at your school about approaching your major from a new perspective. There may be other areas of design that you have not even thought about.
Time to think outside of the box. Know that what you are learning is a valuable skill, just think of ways to parlay it into something you might like.
My daughter (and myself when I was in college) ended up taking a few classes in your major that you just did not like.
In this day and age, everyone looking for a job has to think beyond what was the norm.
Good luck with your decision, but know that most people work at jobs that were not directly associated with their collage undergraduate degree!

I started college as a graphic design major and also worked as one for a small local company at the same time. I found that I enjoyed it much more as a hobby than a career path, so I can empathize with you.

I agree that you need to consider whether you can afford to stop or change majors. Depending on your school and what you switch to, it might only set you back one semester to change majors, or you may need to take summer courses.

Is there just one aspect you don’t like about GD (typography?), or do you hate everything (sketching, animation/web design if you’ve gotten into that, Photoshop and other programs, etc.)?

Art and design jobs are very competitive, and if your heart’s not in it and you’re not one of the best, it could be hard to begin/maintain a career in it. My creativity ran dry when I realized I hated it as a job, and once I changed to psychology I was very happy.

Do you enjoy photography, or some other closely related field that you could easily transition into? What about marketing, visual merchandising, etc.? Or are you interested in another field?

Unless you have your heart set on another degree/career, I wouldn’t change majors. You may end up disliking your new major as well, or find out it isn’t what you expected. Would you be able to take a semester off (personal leave) to gain some work experience and think about what you really want to do?
