Don’t know if this will help at all with your situation, but if scheduling is an issue, Berkeley does offer an online Multivariate Calc class every summer, Math W53.
@bboy99 it probably helps that you’re TAP. Please let us know what the advisor suggests.
@ProfessorPlum168 Thanks for the suggestion. If they give me the option to finish my prereqs over the summer, I’ll definitely look into Math W53.
@Ohm888 I’ve sent my TAP advisor an email. I’ll post an update as soon as they respond.
@Ohm888 She just replied to my email. This is her exact response: “Two math courses are required for admission to the major, although if you’re taking or planning on taking an additional course, be sure to list it on your updates. Also, state that you are willing to take it in summer if you cannot take it this spring. The final admission decision depends on many factors though, so I wouldn’t give up”
It doesn’t really give me much in the way of a definitive answer, but it helps.
I’ll see if I can speak to an admissions officer at Cal, to get more insight into this issue.
This helps you nada, but usually at most CCCs Calc II or Math 1B is a direct articulation to Berkeley’s Math 1B, and usually Diff Equations + Linear Algebra articulates to Math 54 (Linear Algebra). You sorta got screwed in a sense.
@BBoy99 great news. This tells me what I hoped. Put it in for summer. You have a strong GPA and they will be cognizant of the fact that you have calc 1 and 2. It is a rare situation, not accepting calc 2 as comparable to their calc 2 and it’s quite possible they’ll give you leeway if you show commitment. Personally, I think it’s a very good sign and you’re TAP. They’re very committed to helping students through that.
@Ohm888 Thanks for the words of encouragement!
I just found a major that I have satisfied all of the requirements for, and that suits all of my interests: Public Health. Do you know whether I would be allowed to request a switch of majors?
You need to email them. There’s a deadline and public health is in a different college. I know there are sometimes issues with that.
I’m not necessarily sure you’re out of the running though with current major. Maybe you should email admissions first and ask about the calc situation.
@Ohm888 I’ve successfully switched my major to Public Health. I should have a higher probability of being admitted to Cal now, seeing as I’ve completed all of the requirements for PH.
Thanks for all your advice.
^^^ great news! I wish you the best of luck.
Do note that Public Health is an impacted major, so make sure you have a good alternate choice for a major just in case.
Berkeley doesn’t accept alternates.
well, in the case of L&S, they explicitly warn you that there are impacted majors out there, of which Public Health is one of them, and to have alternatives in mind. I took it to mean, alternatives as in having an alternate major specified in the application, but I guess it could mean an alternate when declaring.
For sure I know that CoE doesn’t consider alternates when applying.
Note, however, that UCB L&S admits transfer students as undeclared, expecting them to declare major in their first semester. For public health, see http://sph.berkeley.edu/undergraduate-major/preparing-apply . For integrative biology, see http://ib.berkeley.edu/undergrad/major/declaring.php .
@ProfessorPlum168 UCB does not accept an alternate in the application.
Integrated biology has a higher GPA range and a 22% admit rate, while Public Health has a substantially lower GPA range and an 18% admit rate. So probably a wash, and with all req completed for PH, it seems like a good call.
Take it this semester. Class has not started yet.
