Im new here and a Junior in High school. I am a little lost

I have a 2.68 last year. I think with my grades this semester it might go up somewhat, so Im thinking it will be a 2.8 or in a work of god it will become a 3.0. In my practice ACT I got a 20 which im hoping will become a 21 or 22. I have been in the literary magazine for 3 years as editor. I have been in German Club for 2 or 3 years I dont remember. I am Vice president of German club and the previous year I was Secretary. I volunteered for a couple of months Sophomore year, and my school requires you to do 20 hours of community service to graduate.

I live in Illinois and I want to study in Illinois. Do you know which are colleges are well know for psychology in Illinois? I read certain ones are at the top but then I look them up and people say the school is a joke. So I am a little confused. I am thiniking of going to depaul or NIU, are these decent schools? Or I might even have to go to harper because of the money issue. I am so confused I am not sure what to do.

1) Work hard this semester and get good grades.
2) Prep for the ACT.
3) Contact all three schools you are interested in and ask them to send you more information.

^ Agree with this advice.

Lets go one step at a time, and split apart career from college. Are you interested in this major because its what you think you would enjoy studying in college or because you are thinking of a career in a branch of psychology?

As to the second part of what I asked, have you given any thought to what type of college might be right for you? Large or small? Urban or rural? Small classes or larger lecture? Where students live on campus, live adjacent to campus, or commute in? To answer “are these decent schools” one first needs to understand what is being looked for. I would add that at this stage, junior in HS, a lot of kids haven’t given this a lot of consideration and thats ok. But before you go picking schools you ought to find out more about the types out there, visit some nearby ones to get a sense of what they are like, talk to kids attending them to get their perspective, etc. It isn’t as if there is one monolithic entity of “college” and they will equally serve all students.

Some websites exist that can help you sort on schools in Illinois. CollegeBoard dot com is one, and the college search tool on this website is another. You type in your expected GPA, location (Illinois), and projected ACT or SAT score. You can further narrow down the list by adding more information/criteria (2- or 4-year school, tuition you’re willing to spend, co-ed, etc.). Once you have this list, you can study each suggested college’s website to figure out what majors they have and other interesting things about colleges in Illinois that you have a shot at attending. Psychology is a broad field of study, so most college could have that major. As a junior, keep your options open on majors unless you are absolutely sure so you don’t ignore a school too soon in the process.
