I'm not motivated enough to start summer reading

Reading was never really one of my greater passions and I kept trying to avoid it last year, but now I'm going to actually try to read all of the novels this year. However, I can't really motivate myself into doing the summer reading, and school starts in a little over a month.. I have to read the Autobiography of Malcolm X and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for AP English Language, and I'm just wondering if anyone had any tips to help motivate me into actually reading?

Do a reward system!

Ahaha that's what I do. I know it's dorky, but it works.

Tell yourself that if you finish the book, you'll treat yourself to ice cream. or something. Or do it in shorter segments: reading one chapter = 10 minutes of computer games, etc.

Don't slack!

Or you could just read. Those books were pretty good. I have trouble with the boring ones.

Those books aren't bad (they could be worse). When I have summer work, I make up a schedule and try my hardest to adhere to it. Reading an hour or two a day really cuts down the work if you stick with it.

edit:
I'm surprised you're reading Huck Finn for Language. Most of the work they suggest is non fiction... I guess Malcolm X's Auto helps. Last year my summer work was Fast Food Nation and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (so.. your summer work could be worse...)

We read Huck Finn for language last year too, not over the summer, though.

I'm having the same trouble too, just starting to get to it...I think doing it in small chunks and trying to motivate yourself with something is a good idea.

you have roughly three weeks left of summer. that's only three saturdays.

motivated enough?

I think I need therapy. Procrastination is killing me.

Slowly take away something you enjoy for every day that you're not reading at least 3 chapters of either book.

three weeks left? school doesn't start until after labor day for us, so what.. 6 saturdays?

Wow dude. How can you not read the second one in one day in one breath? It's a book for 3rd graders, common! I'm motivating, not offending, just motivating!!! :)

One of my summer readings - - - it was The Count of Monte Cristo!!!

650+ pages of fun :)

here's motivation.
there are people who havent started their AP Eng. Lit. summer readingS because they are too busy in summer school (coughcough*me). these people are driven crazy by the sight of the 4 bookS on the desk and no time. you have time, you do it now, or else find a way to send other people your free time

and i hope you don't have to take "extensive reading notes" like us. if so, i'd reccommend writing in a pretty color pen, just so it's less boring. i paid $5 for a really nice pen just for that purpose : )

...Well, on the bright side, you're reading literature and not 150 pages of droning textbook. (Imagine if your calculus classes gave reading assignments.)

I'd rather read a calculus book than The Count of Monte Cristo. >.< (And no, I'm not just saying that...I really would.)

I found an organic chemistry book from CWRU more interesting than Fifth Business, but Freakonomics is better than all three.
