I'm not on facebook: Does that disadvantage me professionally?

Hi all,

I'm a 20 y.o. undergrad student doing Economics and Law and I only have an empty profile on facebook to read my faculty's updates/homeworks, etc. And that's it.

A lot of my classmates call me socially-awkward and whatever (which to be honest I don't care too much); what bothers me is that a lot of students seem to be connected with some Consultancy Groups, Student Organisations, etc (by pressing "like" on their page) and I imagine they get some useful updates and information on any events that boost careers.

I'm not sure how serious those events are - they always seem overrated to me - but I'm suspecting I might be missing out on some relevant ones or I might be missing some information (on internships, work opportunities, conferences) and since people don't talk about them, they have become some sort of general knowledge that everyone knows about...

Anyway, do you think, in terms of professional and academic opportunities, am I missing out on them, by not participating actively on facebook?

If so, how could I get the best of them without getting sucked into facebook (to be honest, I'm sick of facebook with pandemic voyeurism and self-importance of nearly all of my class-mates - and the last thing I want to be is another one of those...)

Thanks.

Hi AllNameAreInUse,

In my opinion, Facebook is great for socializing, after-all that is the purpose why Facebook was created. I am in groups for student orgs, but they’re usually there to communicate with other members or talk about an upcoming event. You are losing out on social networking, which can benefit you in the long run as these members start to build their careers and will know someone who knows someone that you might interview for (Just one way to see it by. You will benefit more from networking events, and business mixers, so keeping yourself aware of these events will benefit you. You can always find these information out from your college portal, not necessarily Facebook.

If you are looking for a more professional networking media, I highly suggest LinkedIn. You are updated on internships, job availabilities, and it is the professional aspect of the internet.

As you may have already heard the power of networking is becoming increasingly important nowadays as the job market is highly competitive, so becoming involve in any sort of networking online tool will benefit you after College. If not Facebook, why not LinkedIn?
