I'm not rich - should I even bother applying to UCLA and UC Berkley OOS?

The title says it all. I think I'd have a good shot at getting in, but I'm not one of those 4.0/36/2400 students, so I'm worried that I'd get almost no financial aid.

FA at the UCs for OOS students is low.

Berkeley will give SOME aid, but only up to the amount for instate students.

for instance…at UCB, if your family makes $80k per year, then they would be expected to pay $12k (15%) + $22k (OOS difference)…so they’d pay $34k per year. So, the student would get about $15k in aid (probably about $5500 in loans and $9k in grants…not a very good package).

As you can imagine, a family that earns $80k per year probably cannot afford to pay $34k per year for college.

the other UCs give even less aid to OOS students. probably only loans.

How much will your parents pay each year?

The UC’s are recruiting OOS students that are full pay. This means about $54K in fees and housing. If, as the example noted above, is that the family earns $80K and tuition and fees are deducted, then the family would have to live on $26K per year.

[University of California - Out-of-state tuition & fees](http://universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/paying-for-uc/cost/out-of-state/index.html)

California residents are paying $32K and we aren’t getting any aid either, so an OOS student would have a minimal chance, at best of receiving loans.
