So I feel really sick right now, I have a headache, runny nose, sore throat. I'm definitely going to the health center to get looked at in a bit. I have a chemistry exam tonight from 7-9 PM that's worth 20% of my final grade that I definitely don't feel like taking at the moment.

So a few questions:

What can I do to make myself feel slightly better to take the exam? Is it a good idea to skip classes today?

What can I do in general to make myself get better? Also, if I'm still sick tomorrow, should I skip a 2nd day in a row of classes? since that could be a lot of work to catch up on.

What can I do to not get my 3 room/suite mates sick as well?

I would ask your professor if you can retake. I felt horribly during an exam last week, and it showed. The worse part is my professor would have let me reschedule it :

A lot of schools are encouraging professors to be more liberal in allowing makeup exams due to H1N1, so I’d e-mail the professor and ask if its possible to make up this exam or to count another exam double to make up if you miss tonight’s exam due to illness.

Make sure you have documentation of your doctor’s visit. Ask the doctor to write a note with the date and time of your visit and diagnosis with his signature on clinic stationary/prescription pad-just in case the prof doesn’t believe you. If he won’t do it make sure your paperwork for the health clinic has the time and date noted. Contact your prof ASAP this morning.

Like I said in the other thread, call the professor right away and ask if you can make up because you are sick-- and tell them you are going to the health center and be sure to get a note from a doctor when you go. Same thing just happened to me, it sucks, but we are not the first and surely will not be the last to get sick on exam day.

I just got a email back from the professor saying that if I don’t go to the exam tonight, it will count as a 0 (there are no make up exams) but that the final exam will replace the lowest of the other exam grades if it helps me.

From your point of view, it would make sense to take the exam. Whatever you get, it cannot be lower than a zero.

From the point of view of everyone else, I would beg you to stay away from other people while you might be contagious. Sitting next to someone with a cold is not fun.

I think what the prof is offering is fair. If you can sit upright, you should be hitting the books- take your notes if you’re still going to the clinic. Get some non-drowsy Sudafed, lozenges, tissues, Purell, hot tea, Tylenol and put your next 6 hours to good use. Good Luck.

I think you shouldn’t take it since you have that option of the final exam grade replacing the 0. So just make sure you just stay in and relax, then work hard for the final (try not to get sick then). I’m assuming what you mean is that if you get a 0 on this test and a 90 on the final, the grade on this test becomes a 90 at the end of the course. There’s a good chance you won’t do well today in your condition anyway, so why bother?

It comes down to how well you think you can do on the Final – are you doing well overall in this class? If you think you can pull off the final with a grade you’ll be happy with, then stay in tonight and rest and don’t risk spreading your germs.

You should go no matter what. You said that your final will replace your lowest grade if it helps your average. Give yourself as many opportunities to do well as possible… If you don’t do well, don’t sweat it. You have the same conditions as if you didn’t show up. But if you do well, it will help you in the long run.

Your professor isn’t being unreasonable… There just isn’t much room to allow for sickness as an excuse with the validity always in question (even with notes). I think you should at least TRY.

That sounds ridiculous. Your professor isn’t letting you take a makeup even with a note? That sucks. Say it’s swine flu. I had swine flu last week and I had to miss an exam. My professor wouldn’t let me take a makeup so instead I have to take 2 final exams and the 2nd final will count as the exam I missed last week. Just skip class, nap, and take some medicine, that’s all you can really do I suppose.

You should check the college’s policy about makeup exams…which tend to override the professor’s policy. If you have a legit reason with sufficient documentation to prove it, you should be allowed to make up the exam.

If you really can’t makeup the test, then just go and take it if he’s giving you a zero. Even if you only get one question correct, it’s still better.

Check if there are no subject parts of the course grade IE the grade is only attendance and tests/quizzes.

If the above is true, go to class and make sure to sit in the front. Go out of your way to sneeze and cough on the prof a few times during the test. If he circulates the room this will be easy. If he doesn’t, doing this will require more overtness but is still completely worth doing.

His policy is ridiculous and you’re going to help him realize that. This is only my first term but all my professors have been very accommodating when it comes to getting sick and you need to make your professor accommodating for those who are in similar positions in the future.

^ good job Pierre - I know you felt like crap but at least you don’t have to have any drama with the prof/got it over with. Now if he comes down sick… well, his choice.
Now - Get some sleep!
