i didn't realize how much of a problem money is.

i have to take out like, 30K loans to go to univeristy of maryland, it seems.

even if on april 1st, the need based aid comes out, i still have to pay them all back.

grrrr..are all students faced with this?!

in total or per year?

I am going have to take out loans with my under 1500 EFC number. Like 3,000 in grants b/c i am poor and 5000 out of pocket so that leaves about 10000 per year in loans and 40,000 when i get out.

Whiskers,

Nearly everybody is faced with some kind of debt for college, some more than others. The cost of college is the determining factor in where the vast majority of students will end up attending college. You are right, 30K is a lot of money, but not out of reason. I am assuming you mean 30K over 4 years.

My son recently received an admissions offer from Carnegie-Mellon, with no merit scholarship and we don't qualify for financial aid. At 170K for four years, that is not an option for him, unfortunately. My son's cost of attending UMD would be approximately the same as yours.

Some students chose to attend a community college for the first two years to limit their college expenses. Others, are able to work some during college to help defray the expenses, so that may also be an option for you, particularly during summers. Hopefully, you'll get a grant, work study program or some other assistance to help lessen the financial burden.

Of course, you know that not attending college would be a bigger mistake than assuming some debt to attend. In the workforce that you will be entering, having a bachelors degree is a minimum requirement to even get an interview for most jobs worth having.

Best of luck to you!

i mean 30K for one year. maryland only gave me 2K a year.

Do you mean 30k a year or 30k overall? Because a 30k debt after 4 years honestly isnt that bad.

oh sorry... my question was a little late

wiskers, are you sure that is the entire amount of aid?? I mean they didn't give you 30,000 in loans per year, did they? Or are you saying you will have to get loans from somewhere else?

They didn't give you any loans from the school directly?? How much are you going to pay per year out of your pocket?

I feel your pain though. My dad has agreed to pay for 20k a year, the rest must come out of my pocket. That makes places like Maryland affordable, but I'll never be able to attend private school or a high-cost OOS public like University of Michigan unless i get a scholarship (we don't qualify for financial aid) because I'll end up with a debt of 80k or more after 4 years and plus I'll have to try and pay for grad school after.

whiskers,

I didn't notice before that you are OOS. Surely you applied somewhere in your home state?

30K per year is out of reach for most families and to assume that kind of debt, 120K or more, is, in my opinion, unreasonable.

Thats why most people, who dont get huge merit awards or need-based financial aid, end up attending in state schools.

I am predicting my EFC next year to be 0. I need to rob a bank.

yeah i really like UMD tho..and i live in NY and like, SUNY schools are cheap and great and all that, but i don't really want to go to binghamton............ .

i just really like UMD, lol

UMD isnt worth 30 grand

well, is there a possibility that you will get some kind of loans??

I agree that 30,000 for UMD sounds really bad. i never think about it because i live in state with a 19,000 price tag and I'll be getting 2,000-4,000 in grants due to my low EFC and the pell grant.

You are studying business right?? I don't know because many of your post concern your boyfriend and the business school, lol. If so it is good that you are directly into the business school but you did get into sapphire at PSU so maybe them?? I like UMD better that PSU too but i don't know how much of that has been me rationalizing due to the $$. I was checking over at the Umich thread and I saw you got in there. COngrats!! Umich is much more expensive but you will probably also pay 30,000 up front over there+ 10,000 in loans later. So if you are taking out all loans from somewhere it'll be like 160,000 when walking out of college. Did you get into ross there? If not it is tough to get in later but you seem smart enough to handle it. Umich is really a great school. I think you'll love it as much as you do UMD. UMD has dept. scholarships so maybe you'll get some there.

haha thanks about umich, and yeah i'm really kind of confused now w/ all these schools available to me, lol but idk, umich is sooo far away and it's FREEEZING...but i know those aren't as important but i will be living there for 4 years.

if anything i can go to umd and transfer to uva if i want a warmer area that has stats similar to umich..but i guess we'll see. i still really love umd<3

and yes, i got into sapphire and i'm studying business, lol

the cold is a reason i am not going to wisconsin. One day i was getting ready for school. I was wearing a jacket and I was thinking about how cold it was here, in DC. It was 35 degrees. They went to a national temp map. The temperature in wisconsin was -5.

I said I am wearing a sweater and a jacket on top of that and I am freezing to death in my house. Wisconsin is 40 degrees colder at this very instant.

Hell no.

by the way I was looking at Virginia as a possible transfer spot too. Infact, i was looking at it today. I've got a lot of time to think about transfers though.

hahah yeah i know same here..i was checking out some uva stats..but yeah, coldness=not cool. at all. haha

Today i got denied from UT-austin. I wanted to do business there at mccombs but that was my biggest reach. I didn't expect to get in but it sucks to get rejected. :( (then UT lost in overtime to LSU and I was happy :))

As for transfers. I have been looking at places to transfer to today. UNC seems possible but whatever. Lindz or anyother current UMD students or smith students- Did you ever consider transferring? Do you know anyone that is or has?

yeah i was thinkin UNC, too...but now my boyfriend (the one i speak of quite frequently haha) loves uva..so we'll see later on. i def have time to think about it.

and yeah i'd like to know about UMD transfer rates, also...tho if i like umd too much i wont wanna transfer lol
