I'm trying to Compile a list of schools to apply to. Any suggestions?

This is my current list.

My academic profile:

Weighted GPA is 4.197
Top 15% of graduating class
National Merit Semifinalist
My SAT score as of now is a 2170, but I am retaking it and hoping to bring it up to at least a 2300.

My AP Scoring
World History (3), U.S History (5), English Language (5), Economics (5), Government(4), Statistics (5), Environmental Science (5), Calculus AB (5), Biology (4)

My extracurriculars include

President of environmental club during which I instituted recycling at my school and coordinated weekly collection

National Honor Society

HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America)
Placed first at school level in Dental Terminology
Placed second at state level in Dental Terminology

Volunteer stuff (I spent a summer working at a Texas Children's Hospital lab; other environmentally related volunteering like working at the Nature Center, volunteering at recycling festivals)

I have also been working on a cookbook entitled "In My Grandmother's Kitchen" which has around 80-90 pages of recipes, and stories about my grandmother

Gap Year:

I took a gap year, 5 months of which I spent in India working at an organization for kids from underpriveliged backgrounds. I developed a course in character development which a fellow volunteer and I are in the process of administering, and I arranged for their psychological testing. So basically, I was helping out with general personality development. To that end, I also took charge of the mentoring program, and coordinated meetings with the mentors and children. I also attempted to teach English when I arrived there, which didn't work out, lol, because apparently knowing a language doesn't mean you can teach it. Talk about awkward.

I also took Indian classical music lessons during my time in India and attended a two week summer course at Oxford with the Oxford Royale Academy (private organization) called the Global Leadership Programme.

This is my current college list. I don't really know what field I would like to go into, but some of the field I am considering are business, medicine, and journalism.

Safety

need something here
Reed (borderline - could go either way based on essays)

Medium

UT Austin
NYU
UC Berkley
UCLA

Reach
University of Chicago
Stanford/MIT?

I would appreciate suggestions!

I m not sure if you would be a good fit for MIT: MIT is full of STEM kids, and solely based on your credentials I can’t tell if you are particularly interested in math/science. Are you? If not, I don’t think it’s a good idea to apply there.
Also, Stanford seems a high reach for you. But don’t let what I write discourage you from applying.

UCLA and UC Berkeley…can you pay 55k/year? Are you an instate?
NYU also gives very crappy aid. Take it out unless you can pay the full cost.

UT Austin should be fine.

For decent safety, I recommend U of Alabama(pretty good pre med) and Indiana University(good undergraduate business). Depending on Math+CR you may be eligible for full tuition scholarship in UA.

Unweighted GPA? Your class rank looks like crap.

I agree. Stanford does seem a little far fetched. Maybe schools like Michigan and Virginia would be match schools and a safety would consist of a Maryland

Hey, hey now. Her class rank isn’t her strongest point, but it’s not crap. Hopefully you have a decent UW GPA. Your SAT is good, but higher is better.

Since you’re a NMSF, you should look at full ride/full tuition schools. Some are automatic and some are competitive. Try http://nmfscholarships.yolasite.com/</a>
I’m a NMSF too, and I chose University of Central Florida and University of Kentucky as my safeties.

Washington University in St Louis is said to have a good medical program. I’d say WUSTL would be a match/low reach for you.

If you like city schools (like NYU), consider Northeastern. Their co-op program is very cool and they give a 30K/year scholarship for NMFs.

If you want public schools, UVA is a great school that would be a low reach OOS.

As for reaches, that’s usually the easiest part. Based on your other favorites, I’d suggest you look at Penn, Columbia, and maybe Johns Hopkins.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for your suggestions! They were very informative. I will definitely look into the schools you mentioned.
