I'm wearying to escape into that glorious world: out of state colleges

<p>What do you guys think about going to school away from home?</p>

<p>I've always wanted to get to a new city, away from my crappy home life, to see a new part of the country while in a safe, structured college setting. </p>

<p>I just recently read stuff about the hassle of plane rides, packing, etc. </p>

<p>So what do you think... will "going away for college" be as romantic as it seems?
And, when the out of state option is expensive, is it better to use that money on lots of travel and study abroad? </p>

<p>ps: in my personal situation I'm considering a full ride at University of Washington (in Seattle, where I live) v. a scholarship at University of San Diego / Kalamazoo v. Boston University.</p>

<p>BU would be across the nation.. pretty scary..</p>

<p>I live near K-zoo.. pretty good college..</p>

<p>USD - far yet close (i would pick this one)</p>

<p>yes.. it is scary.. I'm there too, I don't know if going all the way to USC would be worth it..</p>

<p>A full ride at UW is hard to turn down.</p>

<p>How much would you have to pay at UCSD?</p>

<p>^ It's not UCSD, it's U San Diego...IMO, I don't think it's worth the cost. I would choose UW (better school and free in your case).</p>

<p>Er, USD. I would have to pay $17,000. not counting room & board ($10,000) because I'd have to pay that at UW. Actually I was wrong: UW isn't a "full-ride", but rather a tuition waiver. </p>

<p>Here's the thing... going all the way across the nation sounds exciting and awesome, not scary. I just don't know if it is worth because of the cost. Although, my family could easily pay, I'm kind of a cheapstake who is used to going with the cheapest option.</p>

<p>I dunno, given that UW is more prestigious than USD, I'd probably opt for it. Then again I love seattle, so it's really up to you.</p>

<p>What's your intended major? I understand your desire to get away, but you've been offered a spectacular opportunity at a great university that happens to be located near you. </p>

<p>If the OOS college was significantly better...If it was Stanford or Harvard at the premium you're talking about I would advise you to go. But, USD, BU, and Kalamazoo are not nearly as good as UW to warrant the premium, IMHO.</p>

<p>Live in the dorms at UW and enjoy the experience. Root for those Huskies. You won't get the same experience at USD, BU and Kalamazoo.</p>

<p>Of course this is all my opinion. I think you'd be kinda foolish to turn down such a great deal at UW...but, if you really like USD or BU, want to get away really bad, and your parents can easily afford it, go for it.</p>

<p>Gah I know thats why i was super upset when i didn't get in to harvard. but of course everyone is super upset. </p>

<p>I got waitlisted at Princeton and Pomona... I know that basically equals rejection, but in your opinion would Pomona be worth it for the extra cost? </p>

<p>I don't know what my major will be. Probably more languages/writing than sciences. But maybe psychology. </p>

<p>If you're really looking to get away, and $$ is not an issue, I would choose USD.</p>

ps POMONA IS SO WORTH IT, if you get off the waitlist, go there instead of boston u.</p>

<p>its only my opinion, but i found being farther away harder..and more expensive.
the cost of plane tickets, etc. is daunting after awhile, especially when you want to go home for breaks. consider when you would want to go home/how often you would want to see your family, especially if people around you can see them for most holidays, etc. i didnt think going too far from home was worth it, but thats just my opinion. i'm an expert, so PM me if you want more help.</p>

<p>You say you have a crappy home life, but it seems like it'd be easy enough to get lost in Seattle in a nice apartment that you buy with a fraction of the money you're saving by going to a better school. I did get away,but I'm still within driving distance so it's a bit different than you going to BU. However, if money is an absolute non-issue and you really feel like you need to get away...</p>

<p>hum..... i'm going to go visit usd and bu so hopefully that will give me an idea of what it is like to have to make those plane flights all the time etc. </p>

<p>With the full ride you could summer in Paris too. Seriously, it is crazy to pay for college when you can get a full ride at UW.</p>

<p>Going far away for college is not as romantic as it seems.</p>

<p>Seriously, some of my friends who live not even that far away have to deal with expensive tickets, waiting for hours in crowded airports, getting all their stuff to and from school... just for thanksgiving weekend or spring break. Not to turn you off, but it can be very difficult. SO, I'd say if you really love an out-of-state school, go there! But don't go just because you want to be far away.</p>
