Is UW a good school?

<p>I'm a student from Southern California, and I'm trying to convince my parents that it's worth paying the out of state tuition. But since I got into UCSD, they are a little hesitant to even consider going to VISIT uw. What about UW can I tell them to consider it as a viable option?</p>

<p>I’m sorry, but if you can’t answer that question yourself, maybe UW isn’t the school for you.</p>

<p>If your parents can afford and you want to experience college away from home then UW is a good choice. Seattle is a wonderful city and UW is a very good school.</p>

<p>spaghetti - i know the basics of course, otherwise i wouldn’t have applied. but i want something more than what’s on the websites</p>

<p>Seattle is such a wonderful city. Also, going to UW is really amazing. The atmosphere feels so outgoing and laid back at the same time. Everyone seems friendly.</p>

<p>Just my opinion but:</p>

<p>UW > UCSD
Seattle > San Diego
Washington > California</p>

<p>I’m from San Diego.</p>

<p>^
hahah 10charr</p>

<p>Honestly you can go to UCSD and use the money you save on tuition on something nice.</p>

<p>bindi91 - i’m in the same position! I live in norcal. Haven’t visited UCSD yet, but I did visit the UW and loved it. I’m having a really hard time with my parents as well :(</p>

<p>To be honest, you can’t really say if one college is better than the other. Its the overall experience of college life that makes it different. I am certain that both UCSD and UW have a lot of opportunities to offer; you just have to look for them.</p>

<p>As of right now, California is in a crisis and we are not getting out of this recession anytime soon. This isn’t to say California is bad; its just that it makes going out of state a little more justified and allows us to consider more options. I am from California and lots of teachers are getting pink slipped in my area. My AP Language teacher who has taught me a lot is getting fired which upsets me because there are lots of other teachers at my school who are simply getting pink slipped. To put it simply, its just bad.</p>

<p>So consider your options, research the colleges and choose the one thats right for you. No one should make that choice for you. This is 4 years of your life (more depending on your major). You want to put it to good use.</p>

<p>don’t pay the out of state tuition though, it’s ridiculous.</p>

<p>I’m from SD and i can tell you this much, if you want a real college experience, go to UW. SD is a good school, but there just isnt anything to do there. plus, it has an extremely high suicide rate</p>

<p>UCSD is in the middle of nowhere and UW is adjacent to the city of Seattle and you actually get a feeling there are other people around who aren’t students. The campus at UW is far more attractive than UCSD which I recall is just a badly planned bunch of concrete high rises.
And good luck enjoying any big boy college sports at UCSD :)</p>

<p>But the climate is better in SD and the beach is nearer although you have to have a car in SD to get there.</p>

<p>I love San Diego, but Seattle’s where it’s at. OOS tuition is ridiculous for any public university. I think, if you can’t pay that much money, you should also consider community college. Also, takes this into consideration: those who graduate from Bellevue College’s (10 minutes away from UW) usually go to either UW or WSU (80%!) so you should also think about attending a smaller college at first so you can get in-state tuition after a certain amount of time.</p>

I have been to San Diego and had a friend go to University of Washington. The students at UW are nicer and the campus is prettier in my season. The Cherry Blossoms in the Quad are awesome and if you come during the spring when they bloom you will fall in love. The school is top notch and has some of the best programs in the world. If you like the northwest then go for it it’s more of a personal taste and you need to know if you want to go. If you go on a tour it should help you and your parents with questions and concerns. I personally love UW.

UW and UCSD are both great schools. An excellent education is available wherever you choose to apply yourself. I think it’s important to listen to your parents when it comes to tuition. Students should consider that their parents would like to someday retire, have money for other children to go to school, pay for unknown emergencies or medical costs, take a fun vacation, etc. According to the school websites, UCSD would cost $95,168 for four years (in state), while UW would be $215,204 (out of state). That’s a difference of $120,036 in real, actual, hard earned U.S. dollars. Actually, parents would need to earn 28%-39.6% MORE than that to cover federal income taxes (so 153K-167k), then pay for tuition. These figures are approximate, but pretty close. Students can help their entire family by being realistic and considerate of the actual cost of going to school out of state. Rather than try and convince them that they should spend more on your education, thank them for the opportunity to go to college.

I live in Washington and have visited UW several times. I’m a senior in high school right now and have many friends that are attending the U. All I can say is that it is a phenomenal school and the atmosphere is amazing.

Another great aspect is the student life. Whether it’s hiking and camping during the spring or shredding nearby white pass and mt. Baker in the winter, there is so much to do, not to mention the millions of opportunities for entertainment within Seattle. It is truly an amazing place that everyone from Washington dreams of going to (except the heavy drinkers, they prefer WSU). The academics are recognized on a national scale and more importantly on a global scale (currently ranked #11). It is a great school and definitely worth the investment!

I’d say it’s definitely worth the extra money and if you apply you’ll probably get the purple and gold scholarship (about $8000/year) which makes a bit of a dent.

You guys are only 7 years late with these comments…

I would argue that UW is the best school in the northwest region. But it would make sense only if you are majoring in something they are good in such as business, CS, Engineering, etc.
