D’s internship in Seattle at a F200 engineering was changed to a location near home. Fortunately we are near two very large facilities - others had their internships cancelled.
It was reduced from 12 to 8 weeks, so she’s finishing one of her senior year classes online and starts work in a week. They adjusted her role/responsibilities and she’s quite happy with the change.
So it worked out much better than it might have, as several of her classmates learned.
I just shipped D off to her aunt’s on the east coast. Her internship starts Monday and will last for 9 weeks. Although her internship is now online, her hours would not have worked in our time zone. Her older brother is at the same aunt’s house. His internship has been cut in half. It doesn’t start for 2 more weeks. Fingers crossed that it does!
S23 was devastated that his summer program has gone virtual. It’s in performing arts and virtual is just not the same. It’s still running the same number of weeks though. His new boarding school has confirmed that they will start in person classes in August, a little earlier than other years.
It is really encouraging to hear all the internships that are occuring even with modifications. In late March my D had sent many applications but had no solid plans for the summer. However, now my D started a 20 hour/week research paid internship with a thinktank 2 weeks ago. And, yesterday she was offered a paid 20hr/week internship with a Congressman’s office. It was originally planned for D.C. but is now remote. During her interview she informed them she was already working 20 hours a week and they were ok with that since it is remote work. She also got word she was recommended for a research grant. I think like many she is really surprised how it has all worked out this summer. Although she won’t have the same experience doing the internships remotely, she is excited to be able to have the opportunity to have 2 different internships for the summer.
My son is lucky that his summer job/mentorship in WVa (1 1/2 hours from DC) is going really well and paying well. Everyone is working well with him and teaching him and he went hiking the Appalachian Trail yesterday!
I do know two summer camps that really need college age counselors (in TX) so if anyone wants a job and can go right away I can give you some places to check and see it they still have openings. (One camp boys only, one girls only - both traditional outdoor summer sleep away camps - my kids have worked at both).
D18 just got a job in her college town within 24 hours of sending out her resume to a bunch of dance/fitness studios (not in response to any specific job adverts). She should be able to continue it during the school year on a part time basis as well. It seems places really are staffing back up at the moment.
These are hopeful signs! Most of the work sites D applied to have not re-opened just yet, though a few will be resuming some of their operations next week. She contacted several organizations as a “reminder” she’s available.
My daughter received an offer from a firm she really wants to work with, having had the hiring process grind to a halt at other places, many of which contacted candidates to let them know all interviewing had been suspended.
Some places have insisted on in-person only interviews and will not move forward until deemed safe to do so.
She is formulating her counter, and considering the language for the fine points of negotiation for some things she may need to work out.
Apartment hunting is next for her. She is very excited. I am…watching and waiting. Feeling a little unsure for no reason I can pin down.
Our son is starting his internship today after taking a week off after his graduation (BS). The company has been very proactive in emailing him with updates since March. They sent him a laptop last week.
DD flew to San Diego yesterday, starts her in person internship at an advertising agency Tuesday. She said the direct flight from Nashville was full, but middle seats were vacant and everyone was masked up. Her low density AirBNB efficiency apartment is clean and reasonable due to Covid-19, also a 10 minute walk from her office. She has lots of books and will be cooking in and ordering takeout. Her office is practicing social distancing, has just opened back up after months of employees working from home.
It’s not quite the experience that she had anticipated, but we’ll take it as a big win given the current environment.
DD did manager to secure a full-time position with the company she has been working for part-time through the school year - hurray! She hasn’t been into the local office in months, and that isn’t going to change anytime soon. They are experiencing enough cases of the virus to keep people home as much as possible. She’s onboarding remotely, and they have shipped corporate swag/company phone directly to her. The other opportunity she was pursuing just didn’t have head count.
After seeing the number of her peers posting their statuses as “looking for full-time employment”, she’s extremely grateful and relieved. I think that, without already having her foot in the door, she’d be in the same boat.
DD graduated in May - lucked out with a job offer from only interview, but it’s a dream job, so she’s very happy (terrified, but happy). DS on the other hand, graduated in December, had a job, worked 6 weeks & is now on the job hunt again!
@STEM2017 : “S17 started his Civil Engineering internship today. Large subway/tunnel project in NYC. The program was shortened slightly and all of the fun intern get-together activities were canceled, but he knows he is VERY fortunate to keep his internship. Fingers crossed for a full-time offer!”
This sounds exactly like what my daughter expressed great interest in for some time. I was always so fascinated at the idea of her actually walking in and through the underground tunnels (subway and water) in NYC.
@Waiting2exhale Thanks. He LOVES it. Loves his work, loves his team, loves the location. Unfortunately, the project is nearing completion and the team will probably break up for other projects in the fall. In any case, he is really hoping for a full-time offer (so am I!) with this great company.
I’ve told him to be the best intern he can be. Say yes to every request, be the first one in the office in the morning, be the last one to leave every night (within reason). Don’t be too obvious, just be coach-able, likable, and try to always be positive.
This past weekend his team needed a volunteer to come in on Saturday to manage the jobsite. When S17 saw that no one was interested, he stepped up. They were very happy and agreed. He got some basic training on Friday afternoon and was all set. But late Friday night he got a call from the big boss telling him that a senior engineer from another site would be coming in Saturday to manage the site and they wouldn’t need him after all. He was disappointed but also very happy that the team had confidence in him to run the job. Small victories.
Many of D’s friends, all of whom just graduated, have now either got meaningful summer jobs or full time jobs lined up. Or, they are getting interviews. Some of the places where these kids had applied earlier have started hiring again. Several will be starting jobs remotely in August. There are jobs out there. I think it’s going to require more effort than just a few months ago, but things are moving.
