We are still early on combating this virus and many companies are still trying to figure out how to have their employees work remotely. I am wondering how many companies will cancel their summer internships or rescind their job offers in light of possible economic downturn.
D2 is a second year law student. She has received an email from her summer employer that they will need to be creative this summer. Her law school career center is calling for a town hall this Tue. D2’s law school managed to place all of their graduates in 2008. I am hoping they could do the same next year for D2’s class.
I thought I would start a new thread for support and information sharing.
My D’s co-op is still on for this summer but so very many of her friends have had their internships cancelled. Aerospace engineering seems to have taken the biggest hit but her school has a program that pairs students with international internships and all of them have been cancelled. Very tough.
D2 was contacted by her summer employer that she should expect her sign on bonus in few weeks. At her school’s town hall they were told no law firm is pulling back from their obligations. They may push their summer program to Jun-Aug, but they would still pay the full 10+ weeks. Of course this could all change if things were to get worse.
So my son was offered an internship last week of all weeks after his 3 interviews. They have a signing bonus which I didn’t know they do for internships. He signed whatever and sent it in Friday. Hope it still goes through…
My son said some students with finance firms were putting people on hold.
@oldfort. Thx for making this. I was going to post something similar.
I am hearing a lot of rumors about firms putting students on hold. New graduates should also pay attention their offers. On the other hand, a lot of graduates may not want to come to NYC now.
I’m a little worried about my son in law…but then, his degree is in infectious diseases/ epidemiology which seems like it should be a good field right now! He graduates in July.
It is happening. My company just announced it is cancelling our summer program. I just wrote an email to my manager and HR to see if we would reconsider. This happened in 2008 during our economic down turn. I took on 5 additional interns that year (from MBA to Law, technology) just so they would have something on their resume when they graduated. Any parent on this forum who may have any influence with their firms, I would encourage you to keep your internship going. You can try to be creative on how to run the internship and even shortening it, but it’s going to be important for the students to have the internship.
Just incase anyone is deciding on internships now. When my son was offered his internship for this summer he was still mulling over other “possibilities” and one being NASA. He had a solid offer on hand from a major company with great training but there’s always.
Something better right? I told him he might not be the only one they are offering the position to (not really sure how it works) but he actually knows many kids that have had canceled internships
Told him waiting could cost him. He actually listened and accepted it ?.
If I was a student with possible options I would just take something for the learning experience and not be so picky at this juncture or worry about the internship salary. I mentioned this in another thread but I told him if he had to take it without any pay I would support him just to gain experience at the company.
My D sent us a text that the company she works for is rescinding some offers. This is a smaller company but I feel.sad for graduates that thought they would have a job after graduation.
My son is scheduled to graduate end of summer and he just applied for jobs before the Coronavirus hit. He was so excited and now he worries whether he will find a job. He is seeking a position in sports industry so once sports kick off again, hopefully there won’t be too many positions cut and he will have the opportunity.
My daughter’s internship just changed dramatically. Rather than 8 week internship at the accounting firm she is doing a 2 week virtual internship. It is a bit of a letdown but money and learning wise but she knows it could have been cancelled. However she was offered a full time position after graduation.
There are a couple of websites tracking cancellations at major firms. I’m not sure I can post a link, but search candor, coronavirus, freezing. The list is growing by the day.
My firm’s summer internship program will not get get cancelled. My daughter’s internship will not get cancelled but no one knows what the interns will be doing. She feels very fortunate that she already interned with them last summer, they know her well, and she already has a full time offer.
How is a non essential employer supposed to run an internship if location is under Stay At Home order? Can’t provide work computer with security, company software.
