Impact of Coronavirus on summer internships and jobs for new graduates

Thx. Very interesting and long list…

Daughters internship at Booz Allen Hamilton was cancelled today. She was 1 of 300 hired for their summer program in the DC area. Although she understands, she is very disappointed. Was hoping for an offer at the end of the summer. She is currently a junior. The prospect of summer employment is grim.

@FarmerMom. Have her start with Indeed and the like. Have her post on Linkin and the school alumni association etc. It’s still early. Totally disappointing.

@FarmerMom , I’m so sorry for your daughter. That’s tough. I have a current sophomore still looking. He’s not holding out much hope.

@FarmerMom I’m sorry. And surprised Booz cancelled. Have they said whether they’re giving full time offers to those who were going to intern? When things bounce back, they are going to need at least some of them.

It will be a while before things bounce back. I have a family member whose FT start date was pushed back at MBB by 6 months.

@roycroftmom For juniors, we’re talking about fall 2021 to start of 2022 start dates for full time. I do think things will have normalized by then.

Senior daughter heard from her future employer yesterday. First an email to everyone who had accepted an offer saying we are still looking forward to seeing you but we are moving your start date back from June to August. Then she got a follow up phone call with the message “Don’t worry. You still have a job”. We are all so relieved. This is at a large financial institution.

I agree things will be better health-wise. But I expect a financial recovery will take much longer, and most companies are in survival mode right now. Demand for high priced consulting services will not recover for a long time.

No news yet on future employment offers from Booz. They only suggested that they would keep in touch and for students to keep open communication with company contacts. Daughter is a civil engineering major. I am hopeful that the current administration will use an infrastructure stimulus package sometime in the next 18 months to help grow the economy. I am optimistic for her job prospects next year at this time.

I work at a large F500 company. All of the internship offers that we made already are being upheld. But for those who have not made offers yet, we will likely scale back.

My senior received an email from her future employer saying that they are in good shape and have no plans to delay or cancel the start date, although they may have new employees begin work remotely. Their normal onboarding begins with a 4 week training so that’s probably relatively easy to conduct remotely. It will be interesting to see what happens after that. They are a relatively small 300 person financial advisory firm in NYC.

Fingers crossed, D still has a job lined up, but they did email to say she would be starting later. She feels a little more hopeful now, but is worried about some of her friends who didn’t have anything firm yet.

The bad news is that she won (good news!) a Critical Language Scholarship, sponsored by the US State Department. They have cancelled it this year. She was going to do it right after graduating and before the job started. It is now unlikely she will be able to do it. She’s very disappointed, putting it mildly.

My daughter did CLS 2 years ago and was a runner up this year. She is also a senior. They said she can apply again next year since it didn’t happen this year. Even if your daughter had a job maybe she can work that in now for next year? It truly was a great experience for my daughter and would be worth it for yours if she could make it happen. FYI…

H’s company just announced they are cancelling their internships for the summer. They are moving forward with their new hires though.

Still praying nothing happens with my D’s co-op.

Agh… So sad… I know… I hope my son’s still goes on. It’s an essential global business and they talking to him about housing…

I am surprised about Booz Allen. From what I have heard, most major consulting firms are still moving ahead with their internship programs. As someone posted, it is not that hard to set up people remotely with secured laptop. There is no reason why orientation and training couldn’t be done remotely either. I also think this virus will be calmer over the summer and come back in the fall.

There are many companies that may go out of business during this crisis, but there are also many companies in certain sectors that will do well. Your kid may need to pivot.

I am not very pleased with the company my son is supposed to be interning for 3 months this summer 800 miles away. He has to sign his apartment lease - and he’s hesitant to do so but he has to have a place to live. He’s emailed the company twice with very general reply’s “keeping an eye on the situation”, etc. As much as I’d hate it for my son, I wish they’d just make a decision and cancel the internships - they are supposed to start in May and I doubt this mess will be cleaned up by then and I don’t want him that far away. Now I only have to drive 2 hours, not 2 days to get to him. Frustrating…just make a decision!

@threeofthree. Will they reimburse him for his expenses if it doesn’t go through. My sons internship (hopefully will still be on since they are an essential company… Hopefully) has lodging for the interns and coop kids. It is very cheap one being on a campus in a dorm and the other being a one bedroom apartment but he thinks the lease is like week to week kinda thing. Very inexpensive. He doesn’t really care what it looks like just needs a place to sleep. Most of the interns go to inexpensive places like that.

Don’t know if something that the company that your son is going to work for is connected to for housing is better then him getting something on his own. Hope that makes sense.

It’s not an issue of people being able to work remotely, the issue is that in some consulting firms, there is already less new business is coming in. Firms focused on certain industries (healthcare) and/or certain practice areas (commercial/revenue generation), might still be ok, while others aren’t. Recessions tend to negatively affect consulting firms.
