I will tell him. His internship was supply chain and they have a great program for thatā¦
My prediction: Supply chain management will be a big thingā¦
DadTwoGirls, one of the programs canceled was an NSF REU project, so govt. funded research. NSF REU is allowing PIās to make decisions for their own projects based on local conditions.
āone of the programs canceled was an NSF REU projectā
Rats.
So far so good for our S. Heās been home now for a little over 3 weeks (started final quarter online last Monday). When he first got home, the company he is interning at this summer emailed to say everything is still on. One week later, they emailed to say that everything is still on even if they need to work remotely. Some interns onboard in May and some in June, so on-site may be available for some interns (company is in the California Bay Area). Last week, S was contacted out of the blue by the company he interned with his sophomore summer. Their message was that if his current internship fell through, he is welcomed back (although might be remotely as they are in CA as well).
So far, so good. Fingers crossed.
Congrats to you and everyone else. Yeah, he was contacted last week that everything was a go, has a signed contract and they were helping him with housing etc etc. Then todayā¦ Aghā¦
If anyone knows of anything he will apply and we will get him there, PM meā¦ Heās still going to try and relook at Indeed and the like. I told him to reach out to the alumni association also and he has some contacts but this just seems too far reachingā¦
Well can always learn some new programing or certificate thing. Sorry If I am repeating myself. Think I am more pissed then him. Heās still writing the HR contact if anything changes he can be there the next day and he would love the opportunity to interview for a job next year.
My daughter graduates in later May. She is constantly being toldā¦ āGreat resume but we are in a hiring freeze and will let you know when it reopensāā¦
Donāt want them both home this summerā¦ Lol.
NJ needs COBOL programmers, but I think they want volunteers. If only my D were a CS kidā¦
@theGFG - our state needs them too. From what I heard, the unemployment offices use old COBOL and they canāt keep up with the applications coming in. I can see why theyād want volunteers only. . . .
my d is waiting to hear this week if her internship (same place as last summer) will be having its program -probably via remote. Iām hoping so.
^^^^The cobol thing is not even funnyā¦ Canāt believe they never changed it out but the old if itās not broken adage.
I doubt very many current CS students even know what COBOL is. Just another example of how our infrastructure is old and crumbling. Perhaps NJ and other such states should hire some CS new grads to bring them kicking and screaming into the 21st century. But my prediction is that after this rush is over they will simply revert to ignoring the issue.
^^^^The cobol thing is not even funnyā¦ Canāt believe they never changed it out but the old if itās not broken adage.
Much of the banking industry still uses COBOL-based software, probably because when banks merge, the acquirer is typically a bigger older bank with older IT infrastructure. So the acquiredās IT infrastructure is scrapped in favor of the acquirerās, even if the acquiredās is newer.
^^^never realized thisā¦
Just found out last night that one of DS16ās best friends has had his FT opportunity rescinded. He was not starting until 6/1 and he has a great resume in a hot field so he is likely to find something else but it is still quite scary. I hope we get this virus under control soon!
^^^^ they all have great resumes and all of them are scrambling mine as yesterday included. Finding something else is tough when everyone is shutdown. It sucks
Sās summer NYC internship in the financial sector is still a go. Not sure if it will be delayed or remote, but the firm confirmed that the internships are on. S did have an informal Teach America interview yesterday. They had reached out to him. I think he will go through the process in case the job market crashes in 2021 when he graduates. Looking for backups is probably a wise thing to do.
Much of the banking industry still uses COBOL-based software,
I donāt think so. I worked there for 30+ years and I didnāt have any COBOL programmers.
Itās a shame some of those companies are rescinding their offers. D1ās bank is still moving ahead with their internship.
The thing is in many states the peak for the virus is in the next two weeks for Chicago and Wisconsin. My sonās internship was going to start mid to later May depending on which start date he gave them. Maybe, just maybe they would reopen in June? They have several other businesses that are connected to factory like a resort hotel with golf course. The Ryder Cup was supposed to be played there. Just getting the resort up and running again is huge for the local economy.
This may help people trying to figure out whatās happening at Big Law, one person I know was worried that business would slow so much that heād get laid offāsame as in 2008 crisis. He kept his job this year, as he did in 2008, but his salary was cut by half.
^Unfortunately, the bankruptcy/restructuring departments will be pretty busy. A lot of traditional banking/finance lawyers are probably retooling now.
Eastman chemical just suspended their co-op program. This is the first co-op program that D has heard of cancelling. Sheās getting increasingly nervous for her own program even though they keep confirming. Sheās also hearing Purdue isnāt being particularly flexible with their students about changing terms. Hopefully they just havenāt thought it through yet since most co-ops seem to be a go so far.
@momofsenior1 . I really hope hers is still on. If not, maybe the kids can get together and make a start up company and make millionsā¦LOL
As I stated before, I really donāt want āBOTHā of my kids home this summer. My daughter keeps applying for jobs and they tell her , her resume is great but everyone is on a hiring freeze nowā¦aghā¦But she does have some families set up for nanny/babysitting jobs if needed. But that was supposed to be her āextraā thingā¦not her main thing after collegeā¦double aghā¦
