Just curious, how are college freshmen supposed to find internships during this time? Finding one is hard enough as a freshmen, but now it’s next to impossible. DD is considering taking online classes but that seems like a waste of money.
My daughter’s well-paid corporate internship was canceled, but she found an unpaid position with a non-profit she cares about, and her university will pay her as work-study. After a long search, my son found one with a non-profit in DC, and his college is funding him an amount that will probably cover his rent. Both are about to be juniors.
I don’t see how most freshmen will be able to find anything. And a lot of summer jobs they might have filled probably won’t be happening.
The stimulus is a credit to 2020 taxes. The govt is paying it advance based on prior filings in 2018 or 2019 when Bob or Sally may have been a dependent (but not qualified for the child credit (under 17) so there was no $500 credit based on the definition for the child credit of $2000 on taxes/$500 stimulus). But if the filing status for 2020 is single (not dependent), that person gets a credit and on the 2020 taxes, which they can claim the credit if they didn’t receive it as can anyone else who didn’t get it, maybe because they made too much in 2019 but had a drop in income in 2020. They won’t get it until they file the 2020 taxes, but they will get it.
Now for 18 or 19 year olds who are still dependents for 2020, there will be nothing different, but for those who graduated in 2019 and are dependent in 2020, they’ll get the $1200. Delayed compared to most, but they will get it.
never thought I’d feel so excited- but I am for my D16. she got selected for an Unpaid offsite research project for her major.
considering her internship evaporated, she hasn’t found a job for the summer, this is a little boost and will keep her engaged. I think it lets her feel OK about taking a simple job just to make some cash.
three months ago, I’d have shaken my head. Now, I’m nodding.
Congrats. Any experience is positive experience. Maybe she will learn a use skill.
I posted a while back that my rising junior had her REU cancelled – they told her a month or so ago.
Well, good news – she just got a part-time paid research fellowship through her college! It’s 15 to 20 hours a week working with a professor to update the college’s in house bio curriculum with new problem sets in bio/math which is her ‘thing.’
Her LAC has created a number of new research and internship opportunities for students in response to so many traditional options being cancelled. Some, like my D’s, are for the college directly, but they’re are doing lots of outreach to alumni and parents too asking for new opportunities.
I think it’s smart her fellowship is part-time so they can ‘spread the wealth’ across more students.
FWIW I think it’s likely government areas are still interviewing because when they do hire, it may not be an immediate hire due to background checks etc. One of my Ds friends a couple of years ago had to wait 6 months to get his clearance. Of course this level of check may not apply to all jobs. For that matter lots of jobs have start dates several months out from interview.
D started her co-op today. Can’t believe it really happened. She’s so excited! She also found out that a number of friends from OH still have theirs as well. She was afraid to ask earlier in case they didn’t but they couldn’t do their normal zoom call because everyone started their jobs. Nice to hear the good news!
I’ll add to the good news- my new college grad had his job offer rescinded but within a month of that happening landed a job in the same industry- actually slightly better pay and great benefits. He has a great resume, graduating from an excellent school and knows how to network. I’m so thankful and incredibly happy for him.
Good luck to all- I know the loss of internships and research positions is so disappointing. We went from the best job market to the worst in the blink of an eye.
Congratulations to all with good news. Glad to hear it is working out for some young adults.
You may recall me saying my DS is scheduled to graduate at end of summer and was interested in getting a job in a college athletics department. With the shutdown of sports and loss of revenue from the NCAA basketball tournament and possibly college football, he realized landing a job would be delayed. He has been a student intern in athletics while in college so had the network to get a job but there is too much unknown. Fortunately for him, that same network has allowed him to be offered a graduate assistantship that will cover expenses for grad school. With the current job market, we consider that a win.
D is still in limbo with various prospective internships. One employer expects her to lease an apartment in a high rent city for a remote start and with no definite date to transition to on-site work. I suppose the rationale is she will be there and ready to go, if and when they can “open.” My fear is they may not be cleared to open for some time, perhaps not even before the summer ends, and she will waste the rent money. This is a mess.
Mine started his summer job today at a veterinary hospital across the country. After his first day he seems happy and too busy to call. He says he will be working about 50 hours a week (which is fine with him) and has a great place to live. The free basement apartment the vet provided has a bedroom, bar area with microwave, toaster oven, full fridge, coffee maker, sink, etc, bathroom, living area with desk, sofa, love seat and big screen TV and full workout room (he has missed the gym and was very excited by this). The house is on 16 acres with dogs, cats and horses. He may never come back!
How wonderful!
I run an ecommerce company and we have needed 1-2 additional workers this summer. In late April/early May, we advertised on 3 college campuses, and specifically noted our safety precautions (small teams, working alternate days, MWF and TTHSat). We received exactly zero inquiries.
So, I worked my network and hired two young women I know. Both just graduated from college. The first has a job lined up where she interned the summer between junior and senior years, and she continued to work for them through her senior year. As soon as they work out her schedule, she will work full time for them and continue to work for us on Saturday. (She worked for us in high school and we’ve been very pleased to have her back).
The second had several opportunities dry up. She’s pivoted and now plans to go to grad school (locally) in the fall. She came on board and will work for us through the summer. When she starts school, we will re-do the position or wish her well in her next endeavors.
Both have known me for several years and they trust my guidance on our safety precautions. But I did find it interesting that I had no interested candidates from three college campuses.
I am surprised, Mom22039. I wonder if the career offices failed in some way, e.g. to properly advertise the position. My D applied to every single internship she was qualified for!
@TheGFG I also had extra emails with two of the three campus reps to be clear it could be for undergrads or grads filling time. It could be framed as work or internship, paid either way.
It’s ecommerce so the skills/experience/exposure would be applicable to operations, shipping and logistics (both domestic and international), inventory, accounting, social media, product photography, etc.
It could be a summer job — or until whenever they are able to return to their college campuses.
We are in the DC Metro area.
@Mom22039 that is very strange since so many students are looking for internships. Did the colleges put it on Handshake? My D20 and her friends primarily look at the college’s Handshake site for internships, jobs and applying. I think that is especially true now when students left campus. I know that is where she found her internship last summer in DC and the summer before overseas. Last summer she roomed with 5 other girls from her college. They all had had different internships in DC that they got through Handshake. She also just interviewed for 3 more this past week that she found on Handshake. But, I don’t know if all colleges use Handshake?
Two recent grads with non-MBB consulting jobs have had start dates pushed back. Another had a lab job offer with a government health agency rescinded.
A rising sophomore had a school sponsored internship shortened and made remote. Not the experience he hoped for but it will still be on his resume.
I really feel for these kids.
Well, I will put my son on a plane tonight if you got something…LOL…
