do book awards play any role in admissions? there are some people at my school who really shouldnt have gotten them and i was just curious

i don't kno- i got the dartmouth book award and got into gtown early action- don't kno if thats good enough for you

I don't think it plays a huge role. Generally if you get the award you have good stats anyhow, and more than likely will get into the college that you want (of course, not necessarily).

The high school decides who gets which award, not the donating college (though the college sets out certain criteria, they are usually quite vague). It's just another notch on a kid's belt, but it doesn't mean the kid has any "in" at that college.

For example, my Yale book award was for "outstanding personal character and academic promise". Go figure.

I'm curious...do you happen to go to a certain prison-like public high school west of Boston?

at my school the book awards are based PURELY on GPA

Can someone explain to me these book awards?

People in my school always get them and I have no idea what they exactly are and what they mean.

Does the administration just pick some smart kids and give it to them?

I've never even heard of book awards. Enlighten me :)

Book awards are awards given to students in high schools--usually the college will donate the book and criteria for the award, and at some sort of ceremony, it will give a student a partiular award.

I doubt that these awards will raise any eyebrows in admissions, but they will probably add confidence that you're a worthy student (which should already be obvious anyhow). They are awards worth listing in my opinion, but I doubt that they're super-special.

Ha...this is funny...now I don't feel so bad for not getting an award...the counseler who decided who got them doesn't really know/like me. And I was just as qualified as the kids who got them.
