I have Computer Engineering as my major at Purdue. I wanted to know if your undergrad school matters when you apply for an MBA program at a top business school like harvard/stanford/MIT/wharton. would it be a good idea to transfer to a more prestigious univ ( which might suck at engg - e.g dartmouth) for undergrad to have a better chance at the business school?

If you want to transfer then you are going to need a reason.

Your reason cannot include that following:

"Even though your engineering program sucks, I would like to transfer to your school so that I can get into a good MBA program."

Obviously you would never say that, but if it is what you think then you are not going to be successful. Also, if you want to transfer then you better have as close to a perfect GPA as possible because transferring to Dartmouth is not going to be easy as I am sure you know.

Does your undergraduate school matter? Of course it matters because it is another piece to the puzzle. However, it is definitely not something that great stats and great work experience cannot overcome. The relative problem you will face is getting that great work experience as a Purdue grad over being a Dartmouth grad where you will have an easier time because of better job opportunities (again this is all relative. Purdue will provide you with many opportunities also so don't think that I am bashing your school).

If you are doing well at Purdue and you really like how your life is going there then transferring just for the chance to get into a better business school is petty, IMO. If in life you are always chasing the next best thing then you will never be happy (a little life perspective that we all need to keep in mind including myself. Most of us struggle with it).

hey thank dude....i got your point. yes i am aware of the fact that i cannot state THAT reason for my transfer. as for my GPA...im guessing that it would hover around 3.7 - but i do have honors engineering and the toughest courses that i can take at this moment ( apart from research and a whole lot ECs).

the thing about chasing the next best thing in life - i completely agree. however i have other personal reasons too which again cannot be stated in a "why" essay.

I agree with Red Sox.

If you like engineering, and you like Purdue (great school BTW for eng.), stay there. Work experience, grades and GMAT score are more important.

Besides, you're a more unique admit to MBA programs than another Ivy/Stanford/MIT grad.

I have an engineering degree from Berkeley, and I have an MBA (though not from a top program)...my employer paid for it while I went to school part-time in the evening...saved me a ton of money. Good luck. ;)

I know that this thread is old but this is a question many ppl ask sooo.

transfer if you are sure that you wanted to do an MBA from a top top school. Trust me, these big chools would pick a Dartmouth Eng student with a 3.7 GPA over a Purdue guy with a 4.0 GPA any day.

I hope everyone here knows that Purdue is a top 10 engineering school.
