Importance of Financial Aid in admissions?

Hi! I see all these threads with people writing their family’s income, etc, and i just want to know, HOW important is it in college admissions; mostly, in UC admissions. if anything, would’nt the UCs perfer people who could pay their way through, so the colleges would’nt have to give financial aid? but at the same time, i know UCSD gives “points” to people will income less than a set amount. does anyone know if it really matters in the end?
