importance of gpa

throughout hs i have a gpa of 3.3 (in total gotten 3 Cs) but am in the ib program and go to one of the best hs in the nation. If everything out is great could i still get into UVA OOS (i am a urm)

no

well, what school is it? IMO instate you would have a very tough time getting in with that GPA, urm or not. Your urm might, might, maybe, give you a chance if you have cured cancer or have some other amazing EC's greats SAT's and realllly good recs, but I still doubt it. tell us your EC's, SAT's, and maybe you have an explanation for the bad grades?

isnt this the 4th thread you have made about this.

no one is going to tell you anything different this time than last time. Nothing has changed. Now go outside and quit posting the same damn thing over and over again and do something productive that will improve your chances.

Holy Optimus...

ehiunno,
You made me laugh so hard I spit out my drink!

STOP POSTING!
Go get a girlfriend, ride a bike, or go do something productive with your mind.

PS- ehiunno, you're guess of his postings is off by about 10. But, good post.

can we make a separate 'chances' thread or something and ban ppl from posting anywhere but there. oh wait they already tried that. lol. chances... i never even asked for chances haha. how can anyone know.

I asked a couple of times. Then I figured who the f*** knows. I don't want some random person telling me either way, because there's a big (50/50) chance of them being wrong. I may not have taken a statistics course every, but something tells me that it's too high of a chance to gain any benefit from someone's guess.
Another reason I'll never respond to a chance thread.

ROTFLMAO! You guys are in rare form today. I have to say I disagree about chance threads. I have always liked them, but now that I have that dopey software that has all that actual data I feel compelled to help out. All the other U's on CC offer that service, and this is the best board on CC IMO.

I would have enjoyed seeing Jimmyjam spew. E has a gift for hitting a nerve

To the OP: Dude, while I am happy to chance people, I consider it extremely rude to ask repeatedly. FYI, people like me actually spend time researching a candidates chances against various data sets. Since you have no problem being disrespectful, I will respond in kind. Here goes.

IMO your chances are crap. Your uw/gpa is low. Your w/gpa is inflated, (pre ib is not weighed in VA) your ec's are inflated. Just for starters Boy Scouts begins at the end of 5th grade,(cub scouts before that) 7 yrs is overstated, den chief is a joke, and only you know what else is not real. Adcoms are going to pick all of that stuff up, so get it together.

3.3 unweighted and 4.3 weighted? LOL. Now thats what I call grade inflation.

Not really, sigmacentauri. Weighted grading schemes exist for the purpose of internal rankings, nothing more. That being said, the OP is really starting to get on people's nerves.

Yes but that weighting scheme is obviously not giving an accurate depiction of students. I mean, I had an UW of 3.9 and only a 4.04 W. The highest GPA was around 4.1.

I think yr confusing yrself.

Sigma I just noticed you are from Fairfax. I find it common for FCPS folks (including me) to look askance at large disparities in GPA. If you have a uw gpa of 3.9 that means you got a B+ or two along the way. But that could have been a 93%, which is an A almost everywhere in the country.

Meanwhile you are competing with ppl 10 miles away in another VA county who get a 90 = A/4.0 and 98 = A+/4.5 and for an IB/AP that 98% would be a 5.0.

It's a little frustrating.

At my d's school one can have a large range between their weighted and unweighted gpa.

They have 5 levels of courses. In a weighted gpa, a 2 level A=4.0.
A 5 level A=5.67.

Don't we love Fairfax county. I think weighted grades are most important in FFX, and most schools (including UVA) look at the weighted grade because a) it's too much hassle to recalculate all of those B+/C+/D+ which should really be A/B/Cs and b) kids overload on APs so much that comparing a 9-AP class person with a 3.5UW/3.7W (me) to a 0-AP class person with a 4.0UW is highly unfair.

Virginia Tech took a different approach to this issue (and pretty much established a quota without even saying it) by comparing all of the FFX kids to each other. This means little Susie with a 4.2 will get in over little Johnny with a 3.5, regardless of who took what APs or if they got +B/+C/+D grades along the way. I suppose this helps the students in rural VA who can only take a few APs, but sort of screws FFX kids because they're competing against some of the best students in VA (they don't include private schools though).

...uva does have county quotas.

Shoebox, FFX kids don't worry about private kids b/c a hot FFX kid smokes the SAT score of a private. My friend was appalled that she was paying 27k to get an average 1275 SAT. The grades can be inflated in private as ppl don't want to pay 30 G's a yr for private and have a kid get into "NOVA Dame" (as we affectionately call it) I have heard that UVa does compare candidates from within a given H.S. to competing candidates.

Hazelorb, please don't be a tease. I've heard that A) UVA must limit FFX kids b/c they could fill an entire class with them and B) they don't have quotas.
Please spill the beans if you have them...I love gossip.

Vistany: kind of a true statement, but then again there are a ton of public school kids that can't break 1000 (i knew many), and there are plenty of private school kids who went well into the 1400s (I knew many). And I do believe that they compare kids against kids in their school...but, VT was comparing the FFX mass against each other (ie, a poor Herndon kid versus a TJ kid).

And I don't think schools are allowed to have quotas, legally...but they for sure limit the number of FFX students, and NoVa students as a whole.

man I've been away for a long time. This is why <pi this forum. eve pointless threads can get importance.
