Importance of grades in Humanities Courses?

Hey there, I'm a sophomore in college and I'm wondering..do medical schools really care what grades I get in my non-science courses? Or just the fact that I'm taking these classes? I'm planning on taking a lot of humanities courses in my senior year. I apply to med schools before senior year, right? So in other words, since they won't use my senior year grades in their admissions decision (right?), will the fact that I am just TAKING those classes be enough?

Not sure what you’re asking.

Med schools do care about your “cum GPA” which obviously includes non-science courses.

Are you asking… if you take a bunch of non-science classes after you apply to med school and - say - you don’t do so well in them - will it matter once a med school gets your final transcript ?

If so, hopefully others will respond about what would likely cause a med school to later withdraw its acceptance offer.

What can get your admission withdrawn?
This is the list our state med school sends out to matriculants–

1) failing to complete a required course
2) taking a required course pass/fail
3) earning a C or below in a required course
4) failing to complete your bachelor’s degree
5) failing to send a final transcript from every college you’ve attended (includes co-enrollment from high school)
6) failing any class (includes humanities)
7) any academic dishonesty charge
8) any criminal charge (includes misdemeanor arrests)

Oh sorry about that mom2. I was asking if my chances of getting in will decrease if they don’t know what grades I got for all those humanities courses at the time of their decision, since I’m taking them in my senior year.

SUJ–if there is a “substantial” drop in your cum GPA, your offer of admission can be withdrawn. Your acceptance into med school is actually conditional until your final transcript is received.

Now what exactly is considered “substantial” may vary from school to school.

BTW, some med schools do require upper level humanities course to be considered for admission. (USC, JHU)

WOW mom, could you elaborate the humanities req’s for the schools you mentioned, USC and JHU? I don’t have a copy of the MSAR and didn’t realize there are additional req’s for some schools. Do some schools look more favorably on students with many upper level humanities?

Here are Keck’s requirements:

They are definitely important. Medical schools want well-rounded applicants.

*Oh sorry about that mom2. I was asking if my chances of getting in will decrease if they don’t know what grades I got for all those humanities courses at the time of their decision, since I’m taking them in my senior year. *

Well, that is the situation for all that apply the summer after junior year. Med schools don’t see those senior year grades until later.

I guess one could say that schools use your past grades as a suggestion of how you’ll do senior year…and if you let your grades badly slide, then you could get your admission revoked.

All grades are important in total GPA calculation, including all grades in your minors or any electives. Med. Schools will know all your grades from all colleges you ever attended. it is a good idea to always aim at the highest score on every single test/assignment and yes, it is a very good idea to pursue various personal interests in UG, they do care to see a real person with real passions, somebody who can relate to others.
