Hi everyone!
Thanks for reading my thread and I truly hope you can help me out with my question (as naive as it may be).

:) I heard that applying for pre-med for college in high school is more competitive than any other field. If this is the case, would it be better to take more science class (chemistry, physics) or more math classes?

:) Also, do pre-med schools look at community service? If so, what kind?

All comments are appreciated, please respond! :) Thanks! :)

you can't major in pre-med, you can major in anything you want and be pre-med a believe, so i don't see how colleges could sort pre-meds from nots.

Yeah, I thought that as long as you're accepted to a college, you can major in any field you want, and colleges don't accept/reject because of your major. But yeah, you're gonna want to take as many science and math classes as you can in high school to prepare you for pre-med.

There is no such thing as "pre-med major." Major in whatever interests you. Community service and rigorous classes will help you get accepted to college, but don't worry about being "pre-med" yet. Just worry about going to a good school that is compatible with you.

Science and math courses are somewhat unnecessary for pre-med prep. I say "somewhat unnecessary" for a few reasons, but I don't have time to get into them now. (Finals week is upon me!)

What is important is challenging yourself with rigorous coursework - whether that's in the liberal arts, sciences, or math - to build up your critical reading and thinking skill. It'll also improve your time management and study skills.

The more of calc 1, calc 2, biology, physics, and chemistry you can take in high school the better because you will be more familiar with the material if/when you retake these premed classes in college.

I will stick to my guns here. As a highschooler you shouldn't be thinking about medical school. One step at a time or you're going to burn out.

I disagree with the above actually... of course that might be because I am a senior in high school and I'm quite focused on wanting to get into Med School eventually. Basically what I've been doing is just taking the most rigorous schedule in general that I can handle. Thus far this has included math up to Calculus, I've done Bio, Chemistry, and Physics, and am currently in AP Bio. I can't quite say how well this works though! One can only hope that what one does will be to one's benefit!

were chem and physics both APs? if so, did u take both in the same yr?

Way2Serious is right, high schoolers should not be worrying about med school. Worry about getting into college first, honestly. Then worry about how you'll have fun during the summer with friends and whatnot. Then worry about doing well in college. Then worry about medical school.

yes, i meant chem AP and Phy AP. And yes, I was asking whether I should take them both next year, but I don't think I will be able to handle both in the same year.
