I know that you can go to med school without a premed major, but I have a few questions.

What is the importance of being a pre med major for med school applications?

Does being premed help in the difficulty of the classes in med school?

See my situation is that I know I want to work with children and ever since I can remember, I've wanted to be a pediatrician or teacher. Im a junior in high school, and recently Ive wanted to be a teacher, but lately I wanted to be a doctor, a pediatrician more specifically. So I planned on going to NYU and major in Science teacher education. Do you think I could survive med school, with that as my major? Will I be less prepared? Im taking science courses in college so do you think ill be fine?

Years ago -- many years ago, as my kids are now in college -- the following advice was given to me. At my college, a BSEd had fewer upper level science electives to give room for the education courses and student teaching. My advisor showed me how to pick courses to satisfy the requirements for both BS and BSEd. I also had to do one summer (at home in relatively inexpensive state school, so cheap in-state-tuition) and transfer the credit. When I decided that I didn't want to teach high school, I transferred to the school of Arts and Sciences. I had already done the summer and 3 of the teaching courses. I took the MCATs and applied. My school DID have a named pre-med major but I transferred as a straight biology major. I was the first one of my class admitted to med school -- before any of the pre-med majors. Because of the summer session, I also graduated early.
You can make a plan to to keep all your options open.

In a way, I wound up a teacher -- After residency I was in academic medicine for 16 years before moving to private practice. I was teaching residents every day.
