Importance of playing an instrument?

So I've been playing an instrument (piano) for around 8 years. I'm not really that good compared to most other people; I also play casually, I don't join competitions or do "levels".

Since 2 years ago, I have often disliked going to lessons, but I still go anyways.
I find it a waste of time and money since I rarely practice (because I don't have a passion for it).

Honestly, I want to quit because I don't enjoy it the way I used to but I don't want colleges to see that I'm a quitter or something of that kind. In addition, going to piano lessons is an additional extra-curricular activity I could add to my list. Basically, College is the only reason I have been going to every lesson.

Should I quit now or should I wait until I apply to colleges? (I'm a junior)

bump, i need advice :d

Easy and right up my ally!

1) Stop the lessons
2) Start a rock band and be the keyboard player. It’s great fun.

You’re not a quitter, you’re just taking the training wheels off.

Seriously, the reason to play music is to experience beauty and passion. You have to rediscover both.

I’m in a similar situation… I still like piano though, but I’ve found it more and more difficult to practice as other commitments have popped up and taken time. Since I’m not involved in any band or competitions (I’ve only done a few, haven’t won…) I’m not sure whether to quit or not at this point!

I agree with Classic. Drop the lessons, they aren’t helping you.
Use the free time to find your new “thing”, your new passion. 10 years is a long time, colleges can see you have commitment already.

it seems like you already have some sort of enjoyment for piano, even if you’re not passionate about it right now, so maybe try to drop the lessons and apply your playing somewhere else, like ClassicRockerDad suggested.
if you’re hesitant about dropping lessons, can you have them less often?
