Which rec / report / evaluation will be weighted more? the teachers’ or the GC’s? i used to think its the teachers, but then the GC gives very important info such as rank, course load, etc along with a transcript… so shouldn’t the GC one be more important? but then there are like 400 ppl / year in my school, so the counselors dont know us well… what do u guys think?
i got recs from two teacher who know me for 2+ and one who knows me for 4+ years…

I would say that they will be given equal weight, but used for different things. The counselor's recommendation would seem to provide a verification of most of your essential statistics, whereas the teacher's would be a more personal look at who you are as a person.

I should certainly hope that admissions staff realize that counselors know very few of their students well. I know the only time I've spoken to mine is when I have something to complain about.

i hope that admission staff knows that as well. there are 600 students in my year give or take. i doubt my counselor kno my name. i only talk to her when they screwed up my schedule this year.

so i think a lot of people feels the same way about their counselor's rec.

Schools want the transcript and school profile the most from GCs. The letter is used to substantiate the infomation on your application, like PeterSGC said.

I think the GC rec could be very important b/c they can be very honest when looking at you and tell the adcom exactly what they think, b/c they do not know you extremely well and have no bias and also b/c they can evaluate you from an entire pool of 600 students and tell the college exactly how you match up, whereas a teacher for 2+ or 4+ years will tend to have much bias. So i think GC recs are pretty important.

okay, so this is basically airing my bitterness...but be lucky you have guidance counselors at all!!

And I do think that colleges take them into consideration (and their quality) but that it probably depends on each individual case and how much the gc knows the student, etc.
