Importance of school you're transferring out of?

Hey guys,

I'm wondering how important the ranking of the school that you're transferring out of is in the application process? I'm currently go to school ranked 5th in the US and am looking to transfer to a couple different ivies (first choice is cornell). I have a 3.9 so far and good extracurriculars and had very good high school stats at a very good high school. Will coming from a top school give me a boost?

Thanks

It would at Vanderbilt, although I’m not sure about any others. I imagine it would, but only have evidence for Vanderbilt (it’s on their website).

The school you come from is one of many factors considered, it places your gpa and course rigor in context.

Is Vanderbilt considered a “rigorous” school?

It’s not a T5.

Generally, yes. For the same reason why transferring from a lower ranked school to a higher ranked school is harder and vice versa. As Cornell is only within the top 15 or so, transferring down from a top 5 would be a simple affair.

However, make sure you are using the USNews rankings.
