Importance of undergrad

I really want to double major in jazz and business. Some schools I"m looking at such as the New School in NYC have really good music and crappy or very little business programs and I am much higher academically.

Let's say I have my undergrad in economics from a crappy school, will this make it difficult to be accepted into a good grad program?

If I get a degree from a crappy school for undergrad then go to a really good school for grad school will this hurt my job oppurtunities?

If you go to a decent private school, state school or LAC you should be ok for grad school admissions assuming that:

You have an excellent UG GPA

You gain meaningful work experience

You do awesome on the GMAT (I’m assuming B school)

Getting the GPA is doable. The GMAT score is also a good possibility if you did well in school and had decent SAT scores.

Getting valuable work experience, that top schools look for will be hard if you go to a lesser school.

Do you really want to risk it? If I were you I would consider a larger state school, that will have a respectable music program + a fairly decent business program. This will allow you to continue in music while having a shot a decent job recruiting.

bumpp bumpp

I would err on the side of caution by going to a half-way reputable business program with music studies rather than go to a music school and try to throw in business.
