Importance of writing section of SAT

My son is a junior and took the SAT for second time this March… He improved in all areas and declares himself done as his composite score is 2140… But the breakdown is reading 670; math 680 and writing 790… So will most colleges really see this as 1350 out of 1600 instead of 2140 out of 2400… We don’t want to disparage his score but we want to be realistic… He is applying to schools where he hopes to get some merit aid including Ohio state and cincinnati as OOS… And trying for a tough major industrial design… Just looking for opinions on how to view these scores
Thanks

Our experience was that almost all of the schools we visited said they didn’t really look at the SAT writing score. They felt that their own school essays held more weight than 30 mins on a Saturday morning. I guess it depends on the schools though. Do these schools you mention have their own supplemental essays? I’m not sure if the state schools do. If that’s the case, then I think they MAY use them. Not sure if that helps. But since no one had answered yet, I thought I’d share our experience.

Still a really good score, but I think most colleges especially state schools look mostly at M+CR.

The majority of more competitive schools are primarily focused on the reading and math portion of the SAT, as the writing section is viewed to be very subjective. That being said, if your child is unhappy with his score out of 1600, I would recommend he retake it
