Hello
When I write my application essay responses, is there a certain writing style that is most effective in communicating my passion/interest for that summer program?

I personally do not consider my school English assignment writing style to be appropriate for science program apps because its tone and structure always end up sounding like a legal document, which will not convey how passionate or excited I am about participating in the program.

Any tips on how to show passion in words?
Thanks in advance

Yes. Be yourself.

Some people are very informal. Some are very formal. Don’t go to an extreme - don’t use excessive slang or Internet abbreviations, etc.; don’t write like you’re submitting to an academic journal - but express passion in the way you think is best. If that’s not how you write for school, then don’t write that way.

I personally take an informal, conversational tone when writing application essays for most programs. (If a program sounds really serious, though, write seriously.) I go through my writing to make sure I’m still making it sound clean and polished. Informal != bad grammar!
