I have been accepted UAB, University of Alabama, IUP, Pitt at Johnstown, and Penn State at Altoona. Now I need to decide which to go to in order to be succesful as a Biology major! If anyone could let me know any info towards making my decision would be appreciated. Links to websites would also be appreciated.

What is your career goal? Medicine?

What merit scholarships did you get from each school?

Are your parents willing to pay for these schools?

Have you visited any of them? Which did you like?

Alabama is the only flagship on your list. It’s also the highest ranked.

Bama has a brand new mega-sized Science and Engineering Complex. Gorgeous, state of the art…brand new labs, equipment, classrooms, etc.

If you haven’t visited Bama, then this video of the College of Arts and Sciences will give you a glimpse of the school. The Shelby building shown was Phase I of the new Science Complex. There are 4 phases and 3 are complete. Phase IV completes in about 15 months.

I’m not positive on a career goal yet. I was thinking possibly pharmacy, biotechnology, or biomedical. No scholarships. We’ll be receiving loans that my parents and I wil be paying off. I’ve only visited Alabama, but Altoona’s branch campus feeds into main after two years andf I have visited there.

Did you like Bama when you visited?

Are you a PA native?

What are your test scores and GPA?

Are you saying that you and your family will be borrowing all of your college costs? That’s too much money.

Yes, and yes to the first two questions. Test scores: 25 on the ACT and 1200/1600 on SAT and about a 90% average.

I’m concerned that you’re borrowing too much.

What is your EFC?

Will you and your parents be borrowing the entire COA?

We aren’t borrowing too much, so that’s not a concern. haha

oh good…

I must have misunderstood your post…it looked like you were borrowing all the cost.

You can be a successful biology major at any of those schools, but UAB is well-known for the health sciences.

Personally - assuming that financial aid is equal at all places - I would choose University of Alabama. This has to do with my personality - were I to do college all over again, I think I would be equally focused on the social life and the academics. (Actually, I were just thinking the other day that if I could do college all over again to have a different experience, I probably would choose UA.) UA is a top school with a great reputation, and as it’s HUGE there are plenty of opportunities for you to explore. It also has a strong alumni network because of its size. But it also has a great social life - active Greek life, party school (consistently ranked in the top 25 party schools) and Big 12. And Tuscaloosa is a nice little college town, not too far away from Atlanta (about 3.5 hours) and known for it’s nightlife.
