Yes, your son would get the UA scholar award from Bama if he applies before Dec.

What is his major? if it’s engineering or computer science, then he’d get free tuition plus 2500 per year. The extra awards would be from the College of Engineering.

The extra awards from Eng’g won’t show up in the Net Price Calculator, but they are assured as well for stats.

Let me know when you’ll be touring Bama…

He’s undecided, but he will not be pursuing engineering. So, RPI is probably not a good choice. I would like him to pursue computer science, but he’s not sure yet. We are planning to be at Alabama between November 1 and 7. Plans not confirmed yet because we are visiting a couple of colleges. mom2collegekids, what’s the best way to let you know when we’re down there? Thanks for your input.

If he majors in CS, then he would get free tuition plus 2500 per year.

I guess competing with Univ of Alabamas generous offer?

@Rdtsmith‌

Can you clarify? What are you asking?

Are you asking for schools that have offers similar to Alabama? If so, Bama and Temple are the two highest ranked schools with those generous assured offers. …and Bama is such a prettier school. ;)

My D chose the Temple offer - she’s more of a city girl & we have good friends in Philly. So far, it’s been awesome. I do agree that Bama is MUCH prettier, however, Temple’s in a major city, so it’s just your personal preference - cheesesteaks or magnolias??

How does Temple compare to an UC other than publicly available stats?

Probably wrong thread to ask. Moderator please go ahead and delete.

Hello all, I’m bumping this thread because it is of great interest to us in assisting our daughter with her college search. If anyone can add to it or point us in the direction of other useful information on this topic of automatic/guaranteed merit scholarships it will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

It looks like the University of Alabama doesn’t offer the full ride scholarship anymore. It’s only $25k per year.

@outlooker What are you talking about? Alabama’s award hasn’t changed. It was never a “full ride”. The Presidential was always for full tuition. There has been no announced change.

@mom2collegekids You’re right. I got confused because I thought Alabama was a full ride, when it’s actually just full tuition.

It’s more than full tuition as it covers room and board freshman year plus a stipend and money for research/study abroad. And don’t forget a 5th year of tuition.

@rdtsmith He is talking about the Presidential, not the NMF award.

Gee I keep getting confused! So Presidential is tuition and nothing else? I’d better go back and re read then.

Presidential is full tuition at Bama @Rdtsmith The award you’re talking about is for NMFs.

Look at all the different UA scholarships! I didn’t realize there were so many and this doesn’t even list the National Merit one http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.html.

PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR

A first-time freshman student who meets the December 15 scholarship priority deadline, has a 32–36 ACT or 1400–1600 SAT score (critical reading and math scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of tuition or $99,800 over four years ($24,950 per year) to be used towards undergraduate or graduate studies.**

And National Merit Semi Finalist and Finalist are at two different levels too just FYI. Sorry for any confusion!
