Does anyone know how OSU treats outside scholarships? For example, if you qualify for a merit scholarship-- let’s say the 2700 Maximus, and you get an outside scholarship for $5000 per year, would OSU add them together for $7700, or eliminate the Maximus and leave it at $5000?

Also, can you get a merit scholarship from the university, and then a departmental merit scholarship on top of that? (There is a separate form for engineering scholarships.)

My ds is applying for lots of local/ outside scholarships as well as the engineering scholarships, and I was just wondering how this works.

Thanks!

I can only speak for our experience last year, but I don't think outside scholarships affect OSU awards like Maximus. My S got an Ohio Regents scholarship and an OSU alumni scholarship from our local alumni club. Neither affected direct his direct OSU award.

Don't know about how OSU and departmentals interact. That sounds like a question for the folks at OSU. I found that last year the people at Honors and Scholars were more than willing to field email questions related to the mechanics of merit awards.

Good luck.

Penniless: about what date did your son get notified about those scholarships?

The only way it affects you is if you already have full tuition paid for by the university and the outside scholarship is supposed to go toward tuition.

In this case, OSU applies these scholarships toward your tuition and they end up having to pay you less...you don't just get the extra money.

The guidance counselors at Ohio high schools make the selections for the Ohio Regents scholarships. I think every school in Ohio gets one. I forget their notification schedule, but it is the spring and notification comes back through the school. You will know from the Guidance Counselor who that school is selecting when he/she makes the application.

The OSU Alumni Scholarships depend upon the regional alumni associations. The student has to apply for them with the local association (at least they do in our area) and the notifications come back sometime around April-early May.

At least that's how I remember it...
