[important!please help!!] a letter to college board

This letter is from my friend, who is treated unfairly by CB. She really needs help and advices!!! Please take one minute to read the following letter. Your advices and opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I was informed that my October score was CANCELED, after I got an interview from College Board after the December 3rd SAT Test in Hong Kong. I’m really sorry and shocked that College Board (CB), without any evidence, thinks that I cheated in the test which I did not do and I would never think of doing so. The irresponsible mistake CB made not only tremendously hurt my application process; more importantly, it challenged my integrity and honesty, which brought me huge emotional trauma.

Let me tell you how I made such huge progress. I, a non-native speaker, gained it by nothing else but hard work. I took the sat reasoning tests in the States when I was an exchange student there. I did not prepare for the test because I wanted to know what my ‘raw score’ was without any practicing. I noticed that I couldn’t understand a very large part of the critical reading and writing section due to the lack of vocabularies. When I got back to China, I figured the October SAT test might be my only chance to really show my ability and to get into a good college. I studied hard. From Barron 3500 words to the Official guide, from Princeton review to the McGraw Hill, I changed all my music in iPod to the word list and I did mock tests by myself over and over again. When I was memorizing the vocabularies, I see myself making progress little by little. Therefore, the sentence completions are a piece of cake for me now and I can understand every single passage in the critical reading section. After doing so much practice and studying the official guide, the grammar section doesn’t bother me anymore because I can easily eliminate the answers and choose the right one confidently. That’s why when CB challenged my grade that I deserve, I felt insulted.

What was College Board’s reasoning of charging me cheating? The interviewer told me that “College Board used the statistical method to define whether the improvement on one’s score is reasonable”, “one’s logical thinking ability could NOT be improved that much”. But my problem on the SAT had been always the language, never my “logical thinking ability”. How am I supposed to ace a test if I don’t even understand the questions and choices? If a US High School student takes the SAT in Spanish, do you think he or she could use any of his or her “logical thinking ability”? It is ridiculous that College Board judge my case in the same way they do for native speakers. What is more offensive to me is the almost “racist” comment from the interviewer. He asked me “Do you think you Chinese students are special?” I must say no. We just don’t fit for the same scoring and reasoning system. But the charge of “we Chinese students” is so inappropriate and disrespectful. Anyway, the most ridiculous of all is that College Board does NOT have any evidence to prove that I cheated in the test. This “presumption of guilt” does not even match the United States Laws; it is the same as China’s judiciary system, which is frequently impugned by United State.

The SAT test is supposed to give an “equal opportunity” to everyone. But College Board disturbed my December test, therefore devastated my “equal opportunity”. During my December test, I was told to have the interview between section 6 and section 7 during the test. I don’t see any point of the officer at the test center doing so instead of telling me after I finished the whole test. I could not focus anymore during the last four sections. It was a very disturbing conversation which caused me to think of the possibility of the interview and not to focus on the test.

Before this incident, I trusted College Board to be fair and to be a help in my college application process. To me, to success in the SAT is all about studying hard. So after I made such big progress that I gained from sweats, I was shocked and disappointed that College Board think that I cheated to get the scores which I earned by my own diligence and intelligence. How come a world-renowned testing organization judges people by “statistical facts” and the presumption of guilt? How come it destroys my reputation and denies my integrity in such a frivolous way? I’m really looking forward to a more reasonable result for both College Board and me. If College Board could not help me solve this problem then I will not hesitate to seek help from my lawyer.
