So I applied as a major thinking that it would best suit what I want to do later in life. However, I want to go to optometry school and so in order to fulfill the requirements and do something I would actually enjoy, I want to switch my major to Public Health. UCI has a great program and I was wondering whether when I get accepted, would I have to start taking classes for my major that I don't want anymore. Or, can I take a public health class and other bio/chem classes?

I believe you are still within the deadline to change your major on your application and have that major be considered for admission. At least I know UCLA has until January 31st as the change of major deadline. I found this on the UCI admissions website.

<a href=“Apply | Office of Undergraduate Admissions | UCI”>Apply | Office of Undergraduate Admissions | UCI;

“The deadline to request a major change through the Admissions office is June 1 at 9 a.m. You must submit your request on the Message Center at MyAdmission account. Your Admissions Counselor will notify you if it is approved. Approval depends on whether you qualify for that new major and whether space is available in the major. If you miss the June 1 deadline, you may be able to change your major at summer orientation (SPOP), provided the new major is accepting major changes. It’s also possible to change majors after you’ve taken some classes at UCI. Discuss this with your Academic Counselor when you attend summer orientation.”

It might be the same process for changing your application now.

Thank you for the response, Ramonafalls! I wouldn’t be able to get into the major since i need a year of bio done. But my question was during our first quarter, will we be forced to take classes for the major we are still in. Or, can we take classes towards the major we want to apply to?

Anyone? :o
