Okay, maybe it isn't that important, but I have like, this ungodly fear of bugs, and I ABSOLUTELY HATE ROACHES. Sorry; I just found the caps necessary. Uh, say you're staying in a relatively new dorm that has its own bathroom and you have your own bedroom. Are there going to be roaches crawling out of all the crevices? Are they going to creep up on me in the shower? (Oh God please say no.) Should I invest in some kind of super roach repellant spray? If I keep the dorm clean and keep my food sealed, will they stay away?

I just have to know. I hate bugs, man. Hate 'em.

Depends on where you live.

When I lived in the dorms, I didn’t see a roach (note: only a single roach) until spring quarter, when I was using my suite’s bathroom late at night–apparently there was an extremely tiny, unnoticeable little gap under the toilet that the roach was able to squeeze through. I saw it again a month later, but except for those two times in the bathroom, my suitemates and I never saw a roach. After the second time, that roach never came back. (note: my suitemates and I kept our living conditions extremely clean that even the cleaning ladies that came every other weeks to do a deep cleaning of our toilet and shower area didn’t even need to do much, and we never kept open food out)

No they are NOT going to creep up on you in the shower and roaches are not going to creep out of every single crevice you see.

Ants are much more likely. It’s amazing how well they can detect sugar.

Please tell me that you’re not going to the University Miami. I once saw a mosquito carry away a puppy. Ok, so I’m exaggerating.

It probably depends on what part of the country in, whether you’re by water, the quality of the dorm, maybe even what floor you live on, etc. I’ve had some problems with bugs here, but nothing too severe. One year, I had a bit of an ant problem. My bed was pushed up against the window, which was where they were coming in, so there was a brief period where I had to kill ants that came on my bed (and my desk, which was also near the window). However, it was never bad enough that I stopped sleeping in my bed.

At the beginning of this year, my dorm was having problems with spiders. Thankfully, that seemed to go away when colder weather came. I actually wound up filing a maintenence request on that one, because THAT was not acceptable.

I have never seen ants or roaches in my dorm. Every three weeks or so we get a friendly little spider who I take outside.

Also, don’t bring bug spray without checking your housing contract. I know mine states I cannot use bug spray. There are people who might be allergic and even though it sounds like you are living in a suite (I do too) it is still against the rules.

Okay, thanks. Some poss left me with the impression that I was going to be rooming with about fifty roaches or something, so that’s good to know. I can deal with ants; spiders, not so much, but I’ll make it work! Thanks!

Don’t know what school you are headed to but I don’t think I saw a single roach in my entire time at brown. I did have mice in my room once though. Called facilities, they put down some traps, one mouse got caught in one, didn’t see any after that.
