bump

I HAVE TO KNOWWWWWWWW

Dear, if it's anything like Florida, and I'm sure it is, roaches and palmetto bugs are in anything that's more than six months old unless it's fumigated regularly. Sorry, but that's what I grew up with. Keeping things clean helps. The less garbage you keep in your room, the more they'll go live in a room where the people DO keep garbage around.

That said, I don't remember a lot of them at UF until I moved off campus, so I guess dorms get fumigated pretty thoroughly. If it's a problem, you really can control it by keeping the garbage and food out of your room.

(Not having lived at Tulane myself, I answered only because you seemed so panicked, and no one else had responded.)

ah..yuck.
i decided not to visit tulane tomororw because of this. there is no way in hell i could live with such bugs running amuck all over.
sick.

im guessing university of miami in florida is the same then?

Well yes, but as I said, they don't "run amok" unless you leave food and/or garbage around. Leave that to the people down the hall, and they'll go there. Also, you didn't notice what I said about the dorms' being treated for such thngs. If you have good reason to go to a school, this isn't a reason to dismiss it.

i suppose...but i know at the first site of a cockroach i would want out asap...i dont know if its worth the money then.
who knows :(

Why not ask the people who run things about the pest-control program? If you ask in a neutral way, they won't know whether you're asking because bugs gross you out or because you're allergic to pesticides, so you'll get a straight answer. Also, concerneddad's son goes to Tulane, and he might have some answers for you eventually.

I do understand. I grew up in FL, but I never got used to them myself, especially the palmetto bugs. The absence of them is one of the lovely things about living in NC.

what are palmetto bugs?

Oh, geez, I hate to tell you now. They're roach-like creatures about an inch to two inches long. The biggest one anybody can find all year is always the Grand Marshall of the Queen Kumquat Sashay, the anti-Orange Bowl parade, in Florida every year. It's dead when they use it, I think.

(I can just HEAR you squealing now! I'm sorry I brought it up!)

sick..why do they use it in a parade

you base your college decisions on bugs?

Because it's funny. The whole Sashay is a joke--a parody.

AF337, if it's a real phobia, Serin can't help it.

when i was informed about the cockroach population down in nola i was pretty creeped out, but then i just kept telling myself that cockroaches can't kill me (unlike the bears that roam rural nj and the millions of deer i have almost hit driving home at night). Soooo, even though the bugs are a nuisance, as far as i know theyre not life-threatening. Maybe i'll regret saying this, but i;d much rather kill bugs than shovel snow.

I'd much rather shovel snow than kill bugs

here in socal, I havent seen many roaches... we do have LOTS of lizards running around though

Well if you feel that strongly about roaches then you don't want to go to school in Washington either.

I never saw any roaches when I was in Alaska. You might try there. But of course there are mosquitos. I've been to the Everglages and I would rather strip naked and spend a week on a hummock than five minutes on the tundra in Spring. Meanest most bloodthirsty and aggressive critters on God's green earth.

Ewww..... I've never seen a roach at Tulane and I've been here for almost a year!!!

And ewwww! I've never been bitten by a mosquito either at Tulane! Ok guys, Tulane is not in the swamp you know, not even close.

I wish I lived where lizards lived...

We've got em running around here. Big woop.

"I wish I lived where lizards lived..."

hahaha i dont know why but that comment made me laugh

We keep the biggest roaches for pets here in south Louisiana. Some people mount them for trophies. :)
