IMPORTANT: Stanford GPA Recalculation

I sent Stanford admissions an email asking how they do GPA. Just for your information, this is what I got:

Dear ************,

Thank your for you email inquiry about GPA calculation. We are pleased to learn of your interest in Stanford.

When reviewing applications, we recalculate a student's GPA using a straight 4.0 scale, discounting +/-, and include only those classes that are considered core academic courses. Electives are taken out of the equation.
In the end, what is important to us is that you are taking a rigorous curriculum, We want to make sure that you are maintaining a high number of academic solids as you go through your senior year.

We hope this information is helpful. Please feel welcome to call if you have other questions.

Great info!

yeah lol i actually emailed them on july 3...took them forever to respond

About the "core academic courses" part. What if you've already maxed out the credits required at your HS and your transcript counts any extraneous academic courses as elective credits, how will Stanford view this as? Will they consider the extra academic courses, or will they disregard it?

I think by "core" they just mean the core academics, like English, Science, social science, math, and foreign language, not core requirements.

Would psychology, economics, computer science, etc. considered core?

bump (i want to know about compsci, economics, etc too)

I think so. I know when Rutgers says "academic courses" they refer to math, English, computer science, natural science, physical science, foreign language, music theory, history, social science... basically just about everything but gym and health. I don't know about art, though.

It kinda sucks that they discount the +/-. What if you get a B+? Are you stuck with the B?

Well some schools (like mine) don't have +/-, so including it for you guys and not us wouldn't be fair.
