Is it impossible for a Freshman to have a car on campus? It sure would make getting back home easier. I wouldn't expect my son to be driving around town very much.

It is impossible for a freshman to have an official parking spot on campus. Some people sell extra spots at their houses or apartments off campus, and some people have friends off campus who let them park their cars there. It is unlikely that as a freshman, your son would be able to have a convenient place to park no matter what.

Freshman who live at Granville Towers can have a car. Granville has its own parking. Most people who post here don’t say very nice things about Granville, so I’ve given up trying to defend it. You’ll hear it’s the rich kids dorm and all they do is party. You’ll also hear it’s full of greeks. My son has lived at Granville for two years. He is not greek and has enjoyed living there. It’s also very convenient to classes. His rooms have been nice, for a dorm, and the staff has been wonderful. Yes, there are parties at Granville, and there are parties in other dorms as well.

It most certainly is possible to bring your car as a freshmen, if you’re willing to shell out $70-$100 a month for someone leasing out spaces in their driveways nearby. There are an abundance of people on Craigslist advertising spaces at houses right on the edge of campus; I’m a freshman and I park in an extra space of this family’s garage. It’s about a mile from South Campus and accessible by bus if I don’t feel like doing the (easy) walk.

Even if you don’t live at Granville Towers, you can purchase a spot there for $750 a year. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk from south campus and less than a 10 minute walk from the Pit or Polk Place.
